Does he live alone or with another degu?
If he lives alone I would investigate by talking to him quietly to encourage him to come to you.
If he lives with another degu he could quite simply be announcing something. I have had my dominant male squeak for prolonged periods of time, and there is nothing wrong, its just a degu quirk!
Keep an eye on him, several hours of squeaking is not unknown, but any longer would be cause for concern.

My Degus squeak in 30 second intervals for long periods of time regularily. The other one usually pays no attention and I think it's just a reaction when they are startled by something. Like somebody mentioned (I think)it's an alarm call to the other degus to let them know something/someone is there.
