Hey, As many of you know I have 3 degus - Sancho, Alvaro and Chucho. Recently - I would say over the past week or so - Chucho has seemed to be a little "off colour". No major changes so to speak, but small changes which make me worry theres something more serious going on... He's started to shed fur, on his back he has now got two distinct "stripes" where he seems to be shedding, and he seems to be shedding on the top of his head too. As you can imagine this is worrying for me, as the other two degus seem fine. Also, his whole personality seems to have changed, he just seems more introverted at the moment. Almost as if hes a bit depressed. The other two will be running around as usualy, and he'll be asleep in his hammock (well actually on the top edge of the hammock where he hangs his backside over the edge of it...). When he is up and about he seems to be fine, no movement problems or anything - just he doesn't seem to bother coming out any more. See, they all used to come and say hi when I get home from Uni or work before...now its just the two and Chucho doesn't seem to want to come out. Anyone got any ideas? His teeth look fine, no other signs of sickness and the other 2 degus are fine. I'm thoroughly confused - but worried about going to the vet as to be honest, my vet is not really a small animal expert so its a bit of a gamble...

Degus do molt a little, its all part of them growing up, and this can change their appearece a little. I noticed with mine, especialy when the 4 girls were growing, when i swept around the cage, an increasing amount of hair. But if his whole personality is changing, well i dont realy know, but if he gets any more reserved, maybe a check at the vets may help. I hope it is him just growing up and nothing serious.

Or maybe he's ill? My degu losts a lot of fur before winter (right now!) and I have a lot of it everywhere but he's not getting bald. Go to vet. Maybe not that one but different. The vet in neibourg is stupid and didn't know anything about guinea-pig so I didn't want to risk and went with my degu to another vet (20 min by bus :/

Degus shed fur naturally so I've learned by always cleaning up after them. Although if its in large amounts and resulting in bald patches your degu may have contracted a fungal infection. I read up on it for you and it says it could be caused by skin parasites, allergies, horomonal imbalances, improper diet, disease or fungal and bacteria infections. I also read that the best thing to do is let your vet determine what the problem is so they can give you medication that will solve the problem. BTW if your degu is suddenly acting lethargic or its behvaiour chnages suddenly, its a good sign that something is wrong.
