.....for the time i had with squeaker and to share my sadness at the loss of one of my degu's - squeaker - you'll be greatly missed - love me xx
I buried my youngest degu today she died after a week and a half long battle, at the age of three and a half, this all may seem a little strange (or not) but my degu's are a family literally, i bought That'll Be (Dad) and then got Sweetpea (Mum) to keep him company they then bred and i kept four of the daughters from the three litters and they have been part of my life now over the last 6 years......
I first noticed something was wrong with squeaker at the end of august, her front teeth looked exceptionally long and so i took her along to get them trimmed I saw the vet, who took her away briefly cause he needed a nurses help to cut her teeth - he then came back & he explained that all was fine and off home i came - didn't think anything more of it really as i trust my vets wholehertedly....
Until i noticed a couple of weeks ago that there was something not quite right again with squeaker, and fearing it was her teeth again i took her back to the vets - and this time the woman had a good inspection of squeakers mouth - it became clear that where the vet trimmed her teeth previously he had left a sharp shard on one of her front lower teeth, that i hadn't noticed and by now this had caused a slight infection where it kept puncturing the roof of her mouth, and prevented her from eating properly - she had started to loose weight and they gave her a rehydration injection and also a shot of antibiotics, on this further inspection it was identified that there were problems of overgrowth with her molars too so i left her with them over night for a closer dental work over the next morning.
I collected her the next day and was distraught to find my once very healthy (but very shy) squeaker in alot of pain and very swollen - i tried all i could over the weekend but took her back for a check up on the monday and expressed my fears.... they gave me some rescue remedy food and rehydration powder for her as she now weighed a mere 5 oz - so once again i headed home to my very devoted boyfriend, and we have just spent the last week concentrating solely on her. We've been liquidising and syringing her her food and water as her mouth has been too sore to use properly - i fearedthe worst by THursday and had decided that iw as to make one final journey with her to the vets when she started to show interest in food again and she'd gain a little weight and we believed she was going to make it so i changed my mind for fear of doing the wrong thing - until i came downstairs this morning and found that she'd passed away in her sleep ..... so i just wanted to say thank you to a brave little girl who touched my heart and share this story of courage with you!
thanks for reading...
