i've noticed several things about frenzy recently that have me concerned... for starters, he's developed some kind of "raptor claw"... the claw on his left middle finger sticks up, instead of being in line with the toe. he has also started chewing the hair off of his right front paw. he's chewed away most of what's on the back of his paw, but not his fingers, and a patch further up his wrist. today, i was checking out the claw, seeing if he had injured himself or something, and noticed his teeth don't seem to be as orange as they used to be. they're about the color they were when i got him - kind of a light orangey-yellow. i don't know if "white" means bright white, or simply whiter than they're supposed to be. they look white compared to rumble's carrot-orange teeth, but they're not paper-white.
can anyone give advice on some at-home remedies to try before taking him to a vet?

It does sound like there might be a conection with his feet and mouth. Maybe its somthing to do with is teeth, and using his feet to help the problem in his mouth? In my understanding, Degus chew the hair off their feet for different reasons, when Taquila gave birth to her first brood, she took the hair off her front feet, and i put it down to her being a little stressed Maybe he has seen the snake out the cornerof his eye!

Gromit has a bald front foot, and has for ages now. I took him to the vet and was told to just keep an eye on it. It doesnt bother him, hasnt grown back tho! But I have heard about degus that chew their feet when stressed or from bordom. Make sure you can rule these out and he should get better. How much green vegetation is he getting to eat? as this will affect how green his teeth are. Try giving him dandilion leaves as a treat, they love them, and they dont contain sugar! yay

oddly enough, i haven't seen any dandelions growing around my apartments. we must have some diligent gardeners. @__@ it could be the greens, though... i bought a new bag of hay recently, and found it's much longer than the last kind, and there's a higher percentage of stalks to grass (they of course prefer the grass). both degus have been pickier with the new stuff than the old stuff, but rumble is a bottomless pit so he eats more of EVERYTHING. looks like i will be going back to the pet store to pick up another bag of sunthing special hay. ^__^
