awww .. I'm sorry for your loss.. I think usually the other one gets depressed and dies with out it's cage mate. I'm not positive but maybe try getting him a friend and paying extra attention to the other one. Also try cleaning the cage.

nat, I originally planned to have a single Degus. I did research and found if you spend lots of time with your Degus he will come to think of you as a large, funny looking Degus! You would need to spend time handling him and talking to him. Finding time and a place where you can let him out of his cage and sit on the floor with him is a great help. You just have to know your situation. If you choose to keep one Degus, there is a lot of responsibility for not only his physical but his emotional care. Once bonded you could not leave him for any length of time by himself.

I know. I heard that someone gived his degu (after second died) a teedybear. And degu was sleeping with it. My degu now sleeps with round pice of wood which i found wor him yesterday.
I'm afraid what will be when I'll have to go somwhere. On vacations or different trip ...

As long as you give your degu plenty of attention when you ARE home, he will be fine if you have to go away for the odd weekend. Degus kept on their own need lots of attention, but this doesnt have to be 100% of the time. As long as they are reguarly interacted with, kept safe warm and happy, they will become incredibly tame and treat you as an honorary degu!
