My three goos are rescues, and I know very little about them. One, I believe, was abandoned because he didn't get on with others (er, ok?). The other two were a pair that someone bought because they thought they would be cool in a tank they happened to have. After a while, they were abandoned because the person found something more interesting that they could keep in the tank. Somewhere along the line, the three were put together. The charity could tell me nothing more about them, and I double-checked myself they are all boys. With some animals, there are certain giveaways or features that can give a fairly good estimate of age. Does anyone know if there's something similar for goos? I know they're fully grown, but........ Even if I could understand degu, not sure I could trust them to be honest

LOL!! A vet might be better able to estimate an age for each one, for you. It can be rather . . . broad ranges of guesstimation for their ages.

It was more curiosity than anything. The more I understand their backgrounds........but I don't even know who the brothers are. I guess I know the important stuff (how to bribe them, who's brave enough to jump, how my stuff ends up in their cage), but their birthday will have to be the day I collected them

Lots of our members do exactly that. And why not? I think it is perfect!

I think it's really hard to tell. My girls look the same at 5 as they did at 18 months.
Is there any difference in colouring on your boys that might help you to tell who the brothers are?

Unfortunately, not. Apart from personalities and nicks in their ears, the only difference is Spidergoo having a slightly more pointed snout. Sometimes he makes me think of Arnold from Diff'rent Strokes, when he used to say "whatchya talkin' about Willis?". Speaking of which, just got in, so I better go let them out before I get into trouble!

So unfortunate that their ages after a certain point can't be estimated. That's something I wanted to ask here, but found this thread instead. We bought Earwig from a pet store - something we'll never do again - and were told he was 6 months old. This year, we bought two degus from a breeder who knew their exact age, and now that they're older than 6 months, they're much smaller than Earwig was when we saw him first. It's so sad to think he must have been sitting in a cramped pet store cage for at least 7-8 months if not a full year... or longer Those people... eh.

We think someone got it wrong with our Mater; by their estimate he is now 11!! I pride myself on being a good degu-mummy but thats just freaky! He is clearly the oldest and has slowed right down but he still seems happy in himself, and since we have no other way to gauge his age, sod it, we have an 11 year old goo!
