Hi Everyone. Last Friday, I just arrived home from the vets with my wee mouse for mite treatment, only to find my male degu Cheech squeaking and rolling over forwards again and again. I took him from the cage and nearly died when I looked at his genitals. His penile area had dropped right out (for a want of a better word) and the poor thing could`nt retract it. It was hanging there and no doubt causing him a great deal of pain. I immediately rushed him back into the vet, who booked him in there and then. She called me 45 minutes later to say Cheech went through the operation okay and had a few dissolving stitches put in and she pushed everything back into place. Two days later (today) he seems fine and doing things normally. He still has`nt taken to chewing at the cage bars and driving me mad however! I`m keeping a very close eye on him because I don`t want any setback occurring. Has anyone had this problem with their male degus? I did read on a chinchilla website about this happening to a male chinchilla a while back, but never dreampt it would happen to me. I really thought I would`nt see him again, but the lady vet was marvellous and even brought him home for me as I have to take a taxi in, which I thought was very nice of her. If anyone can shed some light on why this happened, I would be very greatful to hear your story. I will update on Cheech later in the week. Thanks for reading.

Hi April
Sorry to hear about your degu. I am not sure If Marmalade had the same situation, but he did have problems with what the vet called a prolapsed penis, in that he was unable to retract it. Luckily he didnt need surgery, so it was clearly not as severe as in this case. I had the embarassing task of having to by lubricant from the chemist and applying it the the required area on Marmalade 3 times a day! Great fun! But I am glad to hear that your degu seems to be recovering. It is awful when you are put into an emergency situation like that, so I am glad it turned out ok.

Hi Meg and thankyou for your reply. I`m glad that Cheech is`nt a one off then, having heard about Marmalade! I`ll know more regarding Cheech this Friday and what the probable cause was. He was absolutely fine the evening before and was quiet all night. I was`nt alarmed until I heard him squeaking on and off when I came home with Kinky my mouse and was sitting down near to his and Prinny`s cage. I knew something was`nt right because he would`nt come out of the wooden hut and was shuffling about and I suspected something was wrong right away. I`m SO glad I rushed him right back to the vet in a taxi because had I been downstairs, I would`nt have been aware of his problem until later in the day and that may have been fatal. He`s such a loving character and it would be very sad to lose him, which is why he`s receiving the best treatment i can give him. So do you think asking the vet for a lubricant would be a good idea? I mean, is it something I should apply say once a week, just to make sure his `bits` are oiled! Poor wee man. I just hope to god this does`nt become a problem for him again. The vet was`nt too opsimistic about whether there was much they could do if it did happen again. So any advive before now and Friday would be great. Thankyou SO much for replying Meg. You`ve at least given me food for thought. By the way...have you managed to find a wheel yet?!!! I`ve lined my spoked wheel with some rigid plastic and looped the ends tightly through the metal running bars, if this info is any good to you? It gives a smooth running surface!

poor wee man with a problem with his wee man! sorry, Im in a silly mood! The vet I took Marmalade too said he was used to dealing with horses, so it was an interesting conversation! He told me to go buy a lubricant (for UK people I was sent to tesco for K Y jelly!) The sodding tube was bigger than Marmalade! I cant say buying some would hurt, it was embaressing having to apply it, and then the little git would go and sit in a corner to lick it off! But it solved the problem. good luck for friday! No, still no new wheel, but the current one has be modified to have a smooth metal rim. It works ok, but looking at it now, its not big enough. Not sure what I will do with the cage the height it is! May be time for a new cage!

Hi Meg. I`ll ask the vet about the K Y Jelly! Cheech has been running about in the hallway with Prinny for about 15 minutes earlier on and he was hopping up and down the stairs. It`s nice to see him looking `nearly` back to normal, although I`m not too optamistic. He still needs to be monitored and when he leans over to clean himself, I watch him very closely because he has disolving stitches! i`m always scared he`s going to pull a stitch out, but so far, he`s been great.

My Degus thingys are always hanging out and they're always licking them. Does that mean they are boys because I thought it was just the female part.
