Hi Guys
I'm knew to the forum. I have 4 Degus, kept as two pairs in Xtrail cages. Their names are: Charles and Magic, Wimble and Jeremiah. I've them for around 3 years.
I'd like to find out what you use as substrate? Has anyone tried Porta Pellis - is it safe? And does anyone use fleece lining? I've been using dust extracted wood shavings, but I'm sure there's better out there.
Any advice or info would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Pipproudfoot, C, M, W, J

Welcome to the forum to you and your boys, I love their names I hadn't heard of Porta Pellis so I just looked it up, it looks safe as it is compressed straw pellets, the reviews seem quite good on Zooplus. I don't know of anyone using fleece or vetbed type thing for degus, I would be concerned that degus might get the claws tangled in it. If you like the liner idea then there are coconut or hemp matting type things that some people use. I use fitch, which is a recyled paper bedding in soft flaky chunks, mixed with Aubiose hemp chips, which I find gives me the best of absorbancy and low dust. Lots of people swear by card based products like Finacard. Anyway, here is our bedding review thread for more info and reviews deguworld.proboards.com/thread/8754/cage-bedding-reviews

Hello Pipproudfoot, and welcome to the forum!! I always used a combination of aspen shavings and carefresh. I did try fleece for a time, but I really didn't like it. I don't think I kept up to it well enough. I think it is something that you need to almost change on a daily basis, which would mean that you would want at least twice the amount of what is needed to cover every surface. I think there may well be some members that use fleece, but I don't know which they are. The coconut and hemp mattings are each well received among several members here.

We use ripped up newspaper and line the cage with newspaper then fill the levels up with the shredded stuff and loo roll! They love it used to use finacard but it ended up all over my lounge. Now it's just the poops!
