Hi, I was just wondering what kind of qualifications should I look for in a vet. I was actually looking for one the other day and had no idea where to start. Im picky that way. I wanna trust that my animal is in good hands and that the vet is verrry knowledgable when it comes to a degu or a hamster. If anybody lives in the toronto area or has any tips on how to pick a good pet as well as normal prices for check ups and such please let me know...thanks!

Hi, I'm about 1 or 2 hours away in London (Ontario)... I don't know any vets in the TO area, but I can perhaps help or at least give a few ideas in the other areas. When we went looking into a vet for our little guys we called every vet in the city that advertised having knowledge with pocket pets and exotics (TO being as big as it is, that method would probably be a real pain though! )... Anyhow... Two or three places said the had knowledge of degus. We got price quotes ranging from $43 (before taxes, for general appt) to about $60. We went with the place that was $43. NOT because it was cheaper, but we were just thrilled that it was the same vet we had for our beloved deceased hamster, and we were absolutely happy with her service to Toshi (the hamster), and also now with the service for Taisuke and Mario (our degus). When choosing a vet for Toshi, we flipped through the phone book looking for places that dealt with hamsters. What got us to call the place we took him (and now Taisuke and Mario), was the fact that they mentioned in their ad that they also dealt with holistic/natural.... methods. I really liked that idea, as everything does not need to be solved with man-made chemical concoctions and what not. ^_^ I hope this was helpful!

I'm going to add that where we live, none of the emergency/late night vets have knowledge of degus, which is very sad. One night we had a scare and called around and were given one place that we could take them too, they did not know anything about degus but said we could take him in anyway... We didn't really like this idea, and luckily Mario was just playing tricks on us ! If he continued to appear as he was, we probably would have taken him though regardless... They cost for these people was somewhere between $80 and $90.

You need to firstly ask if they know what a Degu is, if they dont, dont give up, because if they specialise with "pocket pets" they will have a pretty good understanding of small animals, you just need to ensure that they are aware that a degu cant have sugar.
Vets anywhere in the world are only vaguely aware of degus, as they are still a relatively new "pocket pet". Just go with instinct, and if you visit a vet you dont like, dont return!!
