This article is secondary to 'Greatest Mom in the World'. I had hoped that Mom would be graced with a quick death, dead in the morning when I went to feed her, curled up in bedding and comfy to the end. But that is not to be. She is bony and cries out sometimes, she hunches and her fur is bunched and oily- ears are flat all the time. Since the babies have gone to other homes now we have moved her and her mate into the same cage as 4 other degus and that has made her happy- a bit of soap opera for the sickie. But I can't watch her die slowly, and dying she is. She's becoming mean and lethargic. Clumsy even. Her whole body is wearing out, but not fast enough to be kind. Would you wish this on anyone you cared about? Please, if you have any natural remedies (an aspirin or tylenol) something guaranteed to work.....for hamsters I know that lots of people put them in the freezer. They get cold and hibernate and then just never wake up....but with larger animals the risk is that their blood will crystalize before they hibernate which is very painful. Please do not answer that I should take her to the vet- we just don't have the money right now, and I'm afraid to try breaking her neck- what if I don't break it on the first try? I'm sorry if this thread upsets some readers, but who else do I have to ask? Sad smlmamlgirl.

Oh Smlmamlgirl I can realy sympathise with you, no one likes to see there pet suffering. And yes, i should imagine you have upset afew people on this forum, including me, and im a grown woman I just hope some of our younger members havent read this You cant ask people how to put an animal to sleep. Please promise me you wont try to put her to sleep yourself, and especially not trying to do that to her neck, could you imagine how much pain and suffering she would have to go through if you did it wrong? Please take her to the vet to be put to sleep by professionels, they know what thay are doing. Im sure some one could help with the vet fees, but at the end of the day, my view is that to own a pet is to make sure you can afford to keep them, im sorry for how it sounds, but thats how i feel about. Im sorry shes so ill now, i cant imagine beeing in your predicament, and i understand how you feel, but please let her go in a dignified way. Take her to the vets. Aimee

I feel terribly sorry for you really. But I agree with Aimeelou, asking how to put an animal out of its suffering is awful. I dont want arguments on the forum, so I am begging people not to voice strong objections should they read this post. If anyone can help you, I request they send you a private message rather than post on this thread. I also ask that you look into vets that can offer a service without cost. I know there are such places in the UK. I am so sorry for you. Its awful to see a pet in such a state.
