Frit has been chirping now non stop for 20 minutes. I gave him a sunflower seed to get him in my hand to see if he was hurt or something. Chirped the whole time he ate. this is the first time he has ever done this. His ears are back insted of upright and his poor roommate is scared to death. hiding and wanting out of the room. Any ideas. Could he have just found his voice?? Got me worried.

for one, this question is over 6 months old. there may not be any replies, but the issue was resolved months ago. second, the sound northern's describing is the noise degus make after mating. yes, degus also squeak when scared, but if your male degu is squeaking rapidly, non-stop for a long time, he has mated. you can tell the difference because the after-mating squeaks will go on uninterrupted regardless of activity - they will eat, groom, run around squeaking the entire time. frightened squeaks are usually short bursts that stop quickly.

I have to add, I have experienced the constant squeaking as a result of them "cleaning" themselves a little too much if you get my drift!!! lol

i had a hunch that the squeaking was more of an involuntary muscular contraction after "finishing," hehe.
