This morning I saw that of my 3 month old male degu Reuben has a problem... his penis is sticking out the end of his cone. I had a look on Degutopia and it mention on there about prolapsed penis, I'm not sure if it is that though as I looked at the pictures and his penis isn't stuck right out like in the pictures, only the tip is sticking out (approx 3mm). It mention that antibiotics are normally needed to rectify this so therefore I took him to the vets near me this afternoon... wish I didn't now... I told the vet what I thought was the problem and he didn't seem to understand at all. I got Reuben out and put him on the table, the vet had a little look and said 'He looks fine to me' I then explain no he is not okay you can see his penis when you shouldn't. The vet then grabbed him suddenly very tight around the middle (I'm guessing to examine further) Reuben wasn't happy about his at all and seemed very scared, so he went to bite the vet (He has never ever bit before) The vet then dropped Reuben on the floor and said he must of bit because he is so young. Reuben ran under the table and stayed under there, he was shaking loads. Then the vet went to pick him up but because he ran the vet went to grab him by his tail! 'No you can't grab I'm by this tail it will come off' I said to which the vet responded 'No he will be fine' the vet then went to grab his tail again, I then scooped Reuben up and walked straight out the vets... I was so scared he was going to really hurt Reuben.
Reuben was very shook up when I got him home but after some cuddles and a few treats he seems to have calmed down now.
His penis is still sticking out, I did notice a little bit of fur wrapped around the very end so I removed this. I'm not sure if he has also caught or bit his penis as the is a little cut on the end which bled a little when I removed the fur.
I attempted to take a picture but he isn't one for sitting still long enough and the camera on my phone is really rubbish. The cone is normal colour and does appear to be swollen, the penis is a bit pink but again doesn't look swollen. (The picture doesn't really show the colours very well). It doesn't seem to be bothering him, he is still running on the wheel, eating, drinking.
I am trying to find another vet but so far no success, one I phoned didn't know what a Degu was and another one said they didn't know what prolapsed penis was so wouldn't see him. Is there anything I can do to help him and maybe rectify the problem. He is currently in a cage with 4 other male degus, do I need to put him in a separate cage to recover or prevent further complications?
