we are very sad today all three of Fizzel's babies died. I think they were premature I am going to put up pics to see if anyone knows. Now I am really worried about her sister. I wonder if I did something or rather didn't do something that would have helped her to keep them to full term? Any ideas? Thanks Kate

Kpepsi I am so sorry. Please don't think you didn't do something or should have done something etc. You did a wonderful thing adopting them from the rescue. You really don't know what type of care they received prior to the rescue but you can pretty much assume they were, at best, neglected. She may not have had enough nutrition. She may have been (most likely was) stressed beyond what her physical being could take.

Ra, Thank you for your kind words. You are right I don't know what kind of life she had. And even the humaine society didn't know the proper way to cage and feed them. At least I can and have helped out there. I still feel bad though. I didn't know that she was pregnant and so I handled her just before she gave birth. That was when I saw that she had her nipples starting to show. If I had just turned her over and paid closer attention when I got her maybe I would have known. Oh well could have, should have, would have doesn't help anything now eh? I am being more careful with her sister and have been doing everything I can to keep her happy and giving her proteen like I was told. thanks again Ra Kate

This is what all three babies looked like five hours after birth.

I was handling Mocha when I thought she was a he with bad gas!!! I even scratched her belly which is not something recommended.
Those babies were definitely premature. My babies had darkbrown/ black shiny fur on top and paler whitish tan underneath. Fizzles babies hadn't grown much belly fur. Mocha's brood all had their eyes open and were ready to run!
Mocha really didn't show signs of being pregnant until a week before giving birth and even then I didn't expect a pregnant Degu - neither did you.
How is Fizzle taking all of this? How is her sister doing?

Fizzel has been just fine. Her sister Candy has not had any yet and now I am starting to doubt she is pregnant I don't dare to pick her up to check for signs. (you know like inlarged tits.) Thanks so much for the info your a gem. Kate

Hi, I had the same thing happen with the first two litters Barney, my first degu had. It turned out that we couldn't put any veggies in the cage at all until they were 6 months or so. The veggies gave them wettail and they died within a month of being born. I hope this might help you.

Well my experience was the opposite...our babies were nibbling on everything from hour one, and actually kpepsi, our babies DID look like that. I hadn't thought ours were premies, but maybe they were. But ours were all over the place- micro mice with turbo engines!
I'm so sorry they died. I know pregnant degu mamas are fragile- she could have been too active or had a fall and you wouldn't have been the wiser. Will you let her have more?
Best wishes.
