Good evening,
One of my boys has a swollen penis; it doesn't look like a prolapse when compared to pictures, but still worrying. I was wondering if anyone has seen/heard of this before? I did try and get a photo but he's not willing at the moment!
He has had a possible bladder infection or passed a mass from the bladder, so I'm hoping a course of anti-biotics will help. He doesn't seem bothered by it or in pain, though I haven't seen him urinate (if he is or not) in person yet.
Many thanks x

Is it retracting OK? Are you thinking there could be a piece of bladder stone stuck in the penis?
I would take him to the vet ASAP to get fully checked out particularly with you mentioning bladder issues too. Things the vet might do would be have a good look at the penis, check for obstructions like hair wrapped around the base, they might do a urine dip-stick test to get an indication if there is a bladder or kidney infection.
I'm sure some lubrication might help in the meantime, like some vaseline or KY jelly, and perhaps the vet will give you a more specific cream. The penis can get dammaged pretty quickly if it is swollen and not retracting.

Thank you for the response He's booked in tomorrow with the vets. It seems irritated, pink and blotchy and swollen in comparison to how it usually looks. He was straining to urinate when he (possibly) passed a stone previously, but I can't seem to catch him urinating to find out if that's the case this time. Thank you for the tips, I'm sure he'll appreciate any help, bless him. xx

Oh how painful!! Poor little guy! Do let us know how he is doing, and if you think he is worsening, don't be afraid to run to the vet today.

Good evening, I took both my boys to the vets today; Maki is on anti-biotics for 10 days as well as an anti-inflammatory/pain relief. I've tried vaseline and that seemed to make him more comfortable. His bladder and general health is fine, so I'm not sure what's up.
I'm glad I brought his brother along too for a check up, as the vet found signs of an infection starting in the right lung, so anti-biotics for 10 days for him too.
Poor old boys, hopefully they'll cheer up soon. Apparently if Embry doesn't improve, an xray is recommended, though anesthetic has its own risks...
Thank you both for your support xx

I am glad they have both been seen. Giving them antibiotics can be difficult, but it is worth it. So glad you have caught the chest infection before he was showing visible symptoms!! I hope they both improve very soon and don't need any further treatment. Let us know how they are doing, please?

Good news! Both goos have perked up very quickly and are looking happy. The swelling is going down too. I'm glad to have a very degu friendly vet.
I agree, administrating antibiotics is... Interesting, to say the least. Bribery wins, I'm afraid: A tiny piece of their favourite treat after having meds squirted in the mouth and all is forgiven.
Again, thank you for your support. It's very appreciated x

Poor degus I found motorbike gloves were a life saver for administering anti-biotics!

Though it was fairly successful mixed into some dried herbage. Maki cottoned on to this previously, so I've tried alternating methods
