So, a few months back I moved in With my uncles. They had been breeding degu for quite a while, but have decided to get out of the game. I have taken over their colony and seperated them to stop further breeding for now. Currently, I have six females and six males seperated into two cages. And I have one pair mated in a third cage.
I have been using this group as refence guides for a while now. I figured it was about time to join and say hello.
From the moment I saw these guys in the original single housing colony, I have loved them. Now, I am addicted.

Hello Orrin, and welcome to the forum! Yeah, they are rather addicting, aren't they? LOL! I absolutely LOVE your photo! It captures the character of degus so well. Love it!
May I ask if the mated pair you have right now refers to a bonded couple that you don't want to separate but may reproduce, or have they been mated and are expecting pups but will be separated before the pups arrive, or is the male neutered and they will remain together with no threat of pups for their remaining future?

One male, one female. Seperated because they I know them to be from seperate dames, so the least chance of inbreeding. They we born within days of each other and have bonded. They have been mating, but no signs of babies yet.
My uncles started off with 2 pairs, but did not keep them seperated, the colony got huge. When I moved in, they had nearly 100 Between 4 huge cages. Found homes for all but the last 12 + 2. I plan too keep those. I am working on designing a new set of cages. 4ftx4ftx2ft triple layered.

So you plan to allow pups? Do you know that female degus are most fertile immediately following delivery? So back to back pregnancies are more that possible if the male is with her. Not only that, but because of the safe conditions, and dependable presence of good food sources, degu pups are sexually viable as early as six weeks of age, and not just the females. The male pups are able to father/impregnate as well. Believe me, it has happened in my own home with my degus. So, you have to be really on top of things to prevent the back to back pregnancies and pregnancies in the very young pups.

Hi,
and welcome to the forum.
The photo you use in your avatar isn't yours, is it? I know the person who took this picture and I am sure she would not allow any use of it without her permission. So I request you to change it against one of your own pictures. At least in my country it is not allowed to use pictures that are not your own property (question of copyright).
Thanks a lot!!

Deguconvert, yes, I am aware of that. It is how my uncles ended up with so many. I plan to be very careful with them.
As for my Avatar,Maravilla, I just used one of the first that popped up on google. I meant no harm, I shall change it. I tried repeatedly to use images of my own degu, but they will not load, no matter what I do.
Upon further searching, that pic is a stock photo on dozens of sites, but oh well.

Thank you for changing it!! Upon further searching, that pic is a stock photo on dozens of sites, but oh well. Yes, this is a common problem. But I know the author of it personally and I know that she is not amused about seeing the picture everywhere without her permission. And in fact it is illegal to use photos taken by others without the permission.

Just to clarify as I'm a photographer... people need to be careful if they do not want images shared and used these days. In the UK, unless the photograph is a copyright (and less than 0.01% are) then it is perfectly legal to use and share. People also need to be aware that if they upload photos to socal media that most of the time by doing so you are consenting to allow the photo to be used by others. I for one am happy when other people choose to use and enjoy my photos as that is my reason for taking them. (with the exception of people using them as stock images to sell items)

Might be a difference between the countries. In Germany it is not allowed to use the photos taken by another person without having his permission to do so. And, to be honest, only because I upload photos of my animals for showing them in a forum or for using them on a personal web site (this was the case with the avatar used by orrin) this does not mean that I allow them to be used by others. If I am the owner, the copyright is mine and I want to be asked. No matter if I am a professional photographer or just an amateur photographer. We are not talking about sharing sites (for free or with costs) but about private photos. It is the same with texts. Those you cannot use it either without at least citing their source(s)... and even this sometimes is not allowed without the permission of the author. But I will ask the person whose photo we are talking about in this case as I am sure she is more experienced in this topic than I am. But what I quickly found on research is this: Quick translation (sorry, translations are not my strong point): When is the copyright on a photo created?Copyright and together with it the protection is created by the creation of a work. In case of a photo it is therefore created by releasing the shutter. It is not necessary to tag the photo nor to register it. From my point of view, this means that every photo is a copyright, at least here in Germany.
