Hi all, I am hoping to get some advice from anyone who has raised a littler. Fizzel just had three babies. But now do I feed mom the same as before or what? Thanks

Hi Kpepsi I have recently raised a litter, and gave her the same as normal. Some say extra calcium is needed but i just felt that she would sort her self out without my interfirence. The babys are now 6 weeks old and mum and babys are fine.

My experience is that Mom needs extra everything- greens, hay (esp. alfalfa), I even put chinchilla vitamins in her water (closely related). And yet my mum is not thriving. Part of it is that she had a huge litter of 6 and they are just draining her. Twice now she has wound up with the degu equivalent a cold and pink eye and I've had to treat her with probiotics and oregano oil in blueberry juice- which she hates (can't blame her). The diet of our degus is excellent, but this Mom needs every extra bit I can give her. The greens are what keep all small mammals safe from infection, so while some moms with smaller litters may be allright with a regular diet, my research and my experience have told me otherwise. And trust me, I've researched it- I have 6 babies riding on that research. I just hope that 1) she can make to the babies' 4 week mark, and 2) that once breast feeding is done that she regains her strength.

Hi smlmamlgirl Yes you are probibly right to give extra greens, especialy after a big litter like yours. Degus realy should have greens all the time, not just when they have babys. Hope your family is ok and your mum gets better soon. Aimee

It was fortunate then that I was feeding Mocha (then thought to be a male named Virgil) wheat grass and dandelion greens before, during and after her giving birth to 9 puppies (8 of which lived). I allowed her to eat Degu Pellets (primarily alfalfa pellets formulated for Degus vs the ones I feed my horses) free choice. Do make sure there is always fresh water available. Lactating mothers need extra water for milk production.
