i noticed while rumble and frenzy were wandering around the cage, at one point frenzy appeared to grab rumble's tail and pull on it. nothing happened, and he hasn't continued doing it that i noticed, but was he just grooming rumble's tail or trying to hurt him? i don't want him to pull rumble's tail off!

I don't think frenzy is trying to pull rumble's tail off. I have noticed Mocha will grab and bite Tanzania's tail if Tanzania appears to be ignoring her. I used to worry because all the babies chewed on their mom's tail. Was afraid Mocha was going to have a bald tail. She doesn't. I think your Degus are fine. Have you determined their sexes definitively yet?

not 100% yet, but i'll try to take pics tonight. i can probably get a pic of rumble, but frenzy doesn't hold still for very long so he will be harder. um... is it bad if they eat their own poo? sometimes i'll notice one of them nibbling on a piece. i know dogs do that sort of thing a lot and it doesn't hurt them, but i didn't know if the same applied to degus. they still eat mostly hay and pellets, and they're chewing on the alfalfa blocks more, so i'm just curious. EDIT: i managed to get 3 pics, although they're all kinda fuzzy because the flash just washed out the whole picture, and my camera doesn't take terribly sharp pics without. but you can see generally what's where. the first 2 are frenzy: and this is rumble: they absolutely HATE being on their backs, or in any generally exposed position (we tried, and they would freak out and try to get away), so this is the best we could get. they look the same distance to me... but then i've never owned degus before. ^_^;;;

Got to agree with Aimeelou, the first pic looks like a male degu to me.
Regarding the tail biting, I have noticed Gromit do it quite often, I think this is a jealousy thing as he doesnt have one! But the other degus dont seem to mind too much, and if a tail happens to be at a convenient place in front of them, they all seem to occasionally bite or pull it! Attention seeking probably! hehe

Taco, my little boy does have a crafty nibble on hers when its pionting in his direction, but i put it down to him not having his furry tip! Its mainly when shes being a bitch, like not letting him near the food bowl, he does it!!

As far as eating their own poo, it is ok - they are supposed to recycle to get more vitamin B absorption much like rabbits.
