I have 15 degus. I find it sometimes difficult to tell one from the other (ie; who is who) especially if they are all the same age and have no battle scars like ripped ears or hairless tails. This is especially a problem when I need to take one to the vet and have to capture the right one. Often, I'm in a hurry when I do this and I'm trying to catch one of five running around playing tag with me.
So, what I do now is, when I have time to observe which degu is the one with the problem, I take a small syringe, fill it with beet juice, and then go to the one I want to take to the vet in the next few days and drop a bit of the beet juice onto one of their hind paws. The beet juice dyes the fur, and the fur stays like that for at least 3-4 days if not more, and it is totally non-toxic to the goo.

Great idea, and a good natural alternative to artificial food colouring.

Yes, my husband loves beets. He buys these pre-cooked whole beets in juice from Costco (just heat and serve).
