Hi all. Really hoping for some advice. I inherited 4 degus approximately 4 years ago. However, sadly over the years they have passed away. All but one.... I know they are sociable creatures, and I am now worried that she is going to pine. My home life has again changed so, I am not keen to get anymore. Advice please? Or would it be kinder to try and re home her? Thank you

It is a tough situation, how is she coping on her own? We would normally recommend trying to get them company because of their social nature.

Do you have any idea how old she is? How fit and healthy is she, is she slowing down with old age?

I have no idea, as I say, I've had her 4 years, so poss about 5 but could be older. Not showing any signs of slowing down at all, still jumping about like a mad woman, chewing toys etc...

I think you might just have to wait and see. Some goo's can cope being alone, some can't: keep watch for any signs of loneliness or depression, less activity, lack of interest in food, temprament changes. If she does start to get down and you really don't want any more, it would be kindest to rehome her. If you do, check out the adoption board, there are sometimes others with lone goos looking to get the a companion.

If you don't want to adopt new degus yourself, try to find a new home and company for her. No matter how she seems to cope with her loneliness, it is just not fair for the degu. Even if she's five now, she could live another couple of years. Please don't let her spend those alone.

If she might only be 5 and is fully fit then she will need company. If you have a look at the rescue thread at the top of the adoption board, you should find some organisations that might be able to help. Have a look whether you have any rescues local to you that could handle rehoming for you safely or integrate her into an existing group, or the facebook degu rehoming page is very active and helpful too.

I would not consider rehoming her if she wasn't alone, I honestly think I am doing it for her benefit.
