Hi Anna
it could well be that your baby degu is just getting his adult coat now. This is what is happening to my two, Dillan and Dougal. The soft baby coat is becoming a bit coarser now, as the adult fur is coming through, and Dougal seems to be getting very slightly darker.
I wouldnt be too worried, just keep an eye on it.
If you need to change diet, what are you feeding at the moment?

When I got my older one I was with my ex boyfriend who had degus. He helpd me pick out the food. I got Hartz rabbit gourmet diet. It had fruit pieces and vege pieces in it but I pick them out. I also give them hartz alfalfa. I only give them the alfalfa every now and then. Hehe, Thats good to know about the fur. I was hoping there wasn't anything wrong with him. Hes so cute hehe.

Hi Anna It sounds like your feeding them the right stuff, but what about mixing chinchilla food in with the rabbit food? Chinchilla mix contains alfalfa sticks, which is quite importent in their diet. Allthough some would argue it isnt, i have given it to mine and as recomended, and i think i have a healthy family. I normaly find that the chinchilla mix is about 80% alfalfa sticks, and my degus only eat a few sticks, so i mix rabbit food and chinchilla mix together to give them a good allround mix. Aimee

Alright, I'll have to try that. I'm going to go get food for them tomorrow. So, I should keep taking out the fruit and junk in the food mix. I can never find a good rabbit mix that doesn't have fruit in it. I'll have to have a look around petsmart tomorrow. Thanx for all your help!

I tried feeding Chinchilla food, my my gang dont appreciate it, and literally kick it all out! I have always adviced feeding a rat mix, but have just started trying a guinea pig mix - Gerty Guinea pig for those for who this is available. It doesnt contain fruit or locus beans, and my guys seem to like it. I plan to have a mix of guinea pig and rat mix as they really like that one.
I dont know about everyone else, but in the UK all the rodent food available seems to be laden with locus beans, those large dark brown pieces that the degus love, but are REALLY not good for them! Its a nightmare going through the food taking it out, so its good that "Reggie Rat" and "Gerty Guinea Pig" doesnt contain it!
HA, that was a bit of a plug wasnt it! wonder if they would give me free food if I plug it enough!

I just got back from the store and I went to two pet shops. I went to Petsmart and petco. I had a hard time looking for food at petsmart. No one knew what a degu was and it a kinda annoying to explain. One lady thought I was talking about a chinchilla and she came up to us and said 'I never heard of a chinchilla dieing from eating sugar.' We ended up walking away from her and doing a little looking of our own. We found this rabbit mix that my degus seem to love. It doesn't have fruit in it at all. It's called Exact and it's made by Kaytee.
On the side of the bag theres some ingredients: Dehydrated alfalfa meal, wheat middlings, ground oats, soy hulls, ground wheat, soy oil, and ect,,
My mom and I checked out a bunch of different kinds of foods and this seems to be the best we could find.

Its a good idea to keep a general eye on the detailed contents of your chosen food type as it can sometimes change over time. You need to avoid fruits, locus beans and high amounts of other sweet food stuffs.
