We got our two boys (Ozymandias and Machiavelli) about three weeks ago, and have been in a race to get it right ever since!
My partner Ping is familiar with rodents as pets, and far more comfortable with this than I am, but the boys are adorable, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about them. I admit I'm also a little excited about the DIY portions of this, as I love building things, and it's becoming apparent that appropriate accessories aren't readily available, which means I get to indulge myself.
I'm happy I found this forum, and look forward to delving into the posts for more information on everything. In the mean time, hello!

Hello Vchan000, and welcome to the forum! Yes, many of the cages that are advertised as being appropriate for degus really aren't. Since you love to build, have you looked into the "show us your cage" thread? There are a ton of cages there that are DIY, modified metal cages, combined cages, and a mash-up of both DIY and purchased. So knock yourself out! LOL! Where did you get your boys from, and are you certain they are males? Degus aren't that difficult to sex once you know the trick, but they are miss-sexed quite frequently. and it can be a blessing to be absolutely certain.
This forum saved my sanity when we got our first degus in 2007, and I have been here ever since, grateful to return to others the help I received from the fantastic team we have. If you have questions, ask them! There really are NO stupid questions when it comes to degus.

Well I certainly hope they're both males! We got them from Petland. I haven't confirmed it myself, although one is a little larger than the other. We were told they're three months old and male. We probably should check for ourselves, but given some of their leisure activities it's likely too late. I have eye'd the show us your cage thread, and I'm jealous. I have to keep firmly in mind that we have limited space, and they really can't expand out to take it all over, no matter how awesome that would be. I want them to have enough room to be comfortable and unstressed, with playpen time to give a bit of extra exercise and play. It also all needs to be moveable. My grandmother is phobic about rodents and we host a family dinner once a month or so, so they need to be moved to the bedroom for the duration. We haven't actually told her we have new pets

Leave the degus where they are and have the dinner in the bedroom. Sorted.
