Does anyone know why our two guys would groom each other so hard that they go bald in spots? (back of the neck and under the chin) Also, Sid has developed a huge pouch around his neck, it used to get big when he ate but now it doesn't seem to ever go down - could this be something I should be getting checked by the vet? I guess I'm a little more cautious after the respiratory thing... Jemmy

Good Morning jemmy!
I would have your degu checked by the vet. the swelling is not normal. Grooming is very natural. But the hair loss?? I give mine prime rose Oil which helps with there scratching and promotes new hair growth. It works GREAT. I buy it at the local drug store. it comes in a gel cap. I poke a hole and put in on Corn chex cereal. they love it. i have even held the gel cap and let them bite the hole in it and hurry up and squeeze. This they dont care for. Let us know how things are going!

I took Sid in to the vet on Monday and found that he had a tumor - it was causing him difficulty breathing and would slowly strangle him. I brought him home so that my son could be part of the decision on what we should do. On Tuesday morning we took him in and had him put down. We figure Diago was pulling at the hair around Sid's neck because he must have known somehow that something was wrong. It's been an emotional few days since Sid was closest to my son...and I was so proud of him for making the decision he did - it was really hard! Jemmy

Hi Jemmy, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Is'nt it weird how attached we become to our critters. People think the only animals we should be attached to is dogs and cats...so not true. Please send your son our best wishes. What a strong kid to make such a hard decision. I find it amazing how connected the degu's are to each other. I'am sure that Diago knew that Sid was ill. And that is why he was grooming so hard. Im glad you brought Sid back home with you. It is very important that children know what is going on and have a chance to say there good bye's. What a brave kid. Let him know that we are very proud of the very hard decession he has made. and let him know that it was the right one. Good luck to all.

:'(Jemmy, so sorry to hear about your loss. When we lost Maxi, we made sure our children were a part of the process as well, including saying a prayer during the "funeral". I commend you on involving your son all the way through.
