Hi all I'm will and I'm totally new to degus, I'm thinking of getting them for a pet. This is a good forum.

Welcome to the forum. (Degus aren't exactly the easiest pets to keep so kudos to you for checking out this forum before you actually adopt any.)

Yes, and don't purchase their cage; it is less than half the size they need.

We wouldn't recommend PAH as a source for degus, firstly because there are so many degus looking to find new homes in rescues, and also because their stock isn't always the healthiest. Check out our adoption area and also the list of rehoming places at the top of the adoption board.

If you can't get one from a rescue centre, try a local pet shop or large garden centre. The one I went to was the shop which stocked the cage my goos are enjoying now, and was full of good quality food, toys and treats for them. They also understood degus well, and gave appropriate advice.

Hi, my name's Cindy and I am new to the forum. I never intended to have a Degu but last May I went to PAH for wild bird food and came home with a very distressed, frightened bundle of temper. She was on her own in the adoption area, in a 60cm glass tank and frantic. They couldn't home her because she bit everyone and all of the staff were scared of her. There was very little advice given as they bundled us out the door with a totally inappropriate cage and a sigh of relief. I read everything I could and took her to the vets for a check up (we now have diastix so that I can check for diabetes), but after reading about the problems of introducing a new Degu (she was about 6 months old and had been on her own for 3) we opted to keep her alone. She is now a lovely, confident spoilt brat who still has a temper but has never once tried to bite us. We can do anything with her and she has rewarded us for our patience by trusting us. The local PAH had 4 sisters from last October and 3 weeks ago they sold 3 and left one on her own .......guess who now has 2 degus (in 2 separate cages). My point is (sorry, I know it says 'quick reply') I know that by buying them from Pets at Home, it encourages them to stock more but I could not have left them to an uncertain fate when I had the means and the space to give them both (Pumpkin and Nutmeg) a good life.

Hi Cindy and welcome to the forum. You've done a great thing for those girls, very few of us can resist a lone degu when we see it,but fortunately for me they've all been girls when I've gone in and had a look. Do have a read through the intros thread, it's likely that after so long your original girl will be more amenable to having a new friend, and the sight of a degu pile at the end of the day is always a rewarding one. And don't worry, by quick reply I just think it means it's quicker because you can do everything on the same page rather than loading a new one, you can write a novel if you really wanted to

It's so frustrating, I'm starting to think that 90% of the PAH rescue area is 'rescue' situations they have created themselves by their own idiotic mistakes and bad policy. I recently adopted a single male roborovski hamster from them and only too late in the process discovered he'd been left alone because they sold all his brothers, it left me feeling very torn because you don't want to leave the little fella in their crummy shop but you don't want to feel like you are enabling their bad practice either. I should probably write and complain...again.
Anyway, good luck with the introduction, Cindy.

Hi again, Thanks for the welcome. I have followed your forum for a few months but, after 10 months of 'trial and error', I finally decided to join in. Both Pumpkin (my original) and Nutmeg are doing well - as long as we don't let them near each other. I think this introduction could be the start of World War 3 )

3 weeks isn't long so keep positive. Why not start you own thread in the intros area and tell us all about it to get some more input and moral support.
