I have Approx 5 year old female degu who started to huddle in corners and not move about at all last weekend. During last week Ive noticed signs of bleeding all over her cage which appears to be coming from her bottom area. She has lost a lot of weight so much so that she feels like a skeleton in a fur coat. Has anyone seen these symptoms before Imay be able to provide me with some advice. I dont think she will survive much longer as she is

Hi Kay This happened to one of my gerbils a few years ago and she died shortly afterwards, I think it was some sort of kidney failure. I don't know if its the same for degus but make her comfortable and get her to a vet as soon as possible, ideally one with degu or rodent or exotic species experience. On the whole sick animals prefer warm (be careful as degus can overheat), dark, quiet places as its less stressful. Fingers crossed Willow

Kay, I am so sorry to hear that about your degu. I have to agree with Willow totally. Make her as comfortable as possible and take her to a vet as soon as you can.
It is always heartbreaking when a pet gets sick, when its serious its very worrying, I hope the vet can do something to stop the pain.

Thank you for all your words of support Tessa is still alive and fighting although she is still bleeding Its really odd because everyday she appears to be more responsive but its still very up and down. Willow thanks for the links to the vets we will check into how far away these are and give them a call. Everyone keep their fingers crossed for her please.

:'(Thanks to everyone for their advice and support. We did go to a vet who admitted they were no specialist but said that they had seen and treated Degu’s before. The best I was going to get around here in the short time I had to find a vet. I did speak to a vet in Scotland also who was a specialist but all he could do was advise and suggest I get her looked at. The local vet gave me some medicine and a syringe to be able to give her it and also water which I did and for a day she looked to be surviving. Unfortunately Tessa died Saturday night after struggling for breath. I was so upset but in the end she had no quality of life left and so I think it was better for her to go to sleep for the last time. She will be missed.

I am really sorry to hear that.
It is always sad when you lose a pet, something only a fellow pet owner can really understand.
My heart goes out to you, and I hope you will decide to honour her memory and get a baby degu. Not as a replacement, as I know from my own experience that that is never possible, but as a different degu because of how wonderful your own was.
best wishes

Thats a really nice thought, I will be putting a bright and cheerful plant in the garden where she lies so there is something to look at and remember her by. She will be buried with her favorite toy so she doesnt lie alone.
We may have to get another Degu as Alfa our last remaining Degu is missing her a lot. They used to talk to each other through the bars and keep each other company. Alfa has already lost his mum and sister so we are a bit concerened that he may go down hill from here.

I'm really sorry for the loss of your Tessa. May she rest in peace.
On this note, it is with a warm heart that I let you know that we just had 7 babies last nite, and in honor of Tessa's spirit, I would be honored to name one of the pups after your Tessa. I'm sure there's a girl in that clan. Right now I don't want to touch/disturb them, but please let me know how you feel about that idea.
Much Respect, Sandy

Hi Kay I'm really sorry to hear about Tessa, its hard to lose a pet like that. Its a really sweet idea from Sandy to name one of her babies after her. If you're thinking of getting a friend for Alfa Paula from erodent has just set up a degu rescue page. Its mostly UK based .http://www.erodent.co.uk/DeguRescue.htm. Willow

Hi Kay, we are going to keep the momma and papa for sure. we will keep all the pups until they find a good home. I will not sell them for profit. I have thought of it, but now I've made up my mind. I am a huge fan of my new family critters and hence I'm willing to let them go to people I know who will enjoy them, and if something ever happens that they can't take care of the critters, I can at least take them back. (providing my situation would allow for that of course)
They are only 2 days old and already squirming around. I can't believe she pumped out 8 of them...she's a champ !!
Have a great weekend folks. Sandy
