just like to say thank you. i was offered two degu but had no idea what was involved in caring for them until i visited your site. after reading thoroughy all the information and lots of the threads here i am pleased to say i welcomed gizmo and mojo into my home and my heart. my 11 yr old son is fascinated by their mannerisms and after 3 days of just holding our hands near to them as we speak to them they r becoming more comfortable with us. mojo even just walked onto mine last night and had a run up and down my arms and across my chest.
am i right in not cleaning the cage(aquarium) out for the first week because i would like them to feel more comfartable in our home b4 i move them or forcably pick them up to put them in a spare cage while i clean theirs out? Again a really big thank you to all for any and comments i have read so far. xxx

yes, cage-cleaning can be left to once every 1-2 weeks, depending on how messy your degus are. what i do to clean the cage is clear off the bathroom floor, take the cage and cleaning supplies in, shut the door, and just let the degus wander out of the cage on their own and walk around while i clean the cage.

thanx for that, i make sure their sand is clean and things like that but its a 3'x1 1/2' aquarium, they r getting more used to us by the day tho, mojo is the more dominant and he regulary climbs onto our hands whereas giz is just starting to come and sniff us out. i am now on the look out for a roof extension and my son wants to go xmas shopping for some more toys for them. thanx again Gracie xx

Hi Gracie, welcome to my forum. I hope you like it! I am actually really pleased to see that you have a degu called Gizmo. If you visit the website that started this forum, you will see that my first degu was called Gizmo, and it was because of the lack of knowledge we had while he was with us that the whole site grew in the first place!
Anyway, welcome to the forum, if you have any questions, post away, we are all friendly and here to help each other!
Meg
