degus originate in chile, and live in a system of tunnels and burrows in large colonies of up to 100! i am not exactly sure what the temperature is like, but i believe it's a moderate climate with cold winters and warm summers, like you get in the states. they feed mostly on weeds, grass and the like. i am not sure how many wild degus there are, but they are considered a pest in chile, so i'm sure they're fairly plentiful.

naturally, it is probably a combination of staying underground and huddling in large groups - the patented degu-pile™.

there is just one thing that can be said about that: the degu-pile™ rules!
and is probably the best way they have of staying warm, as well as bonding and establishing family relationships!

@___@ if they do, it would have to be spread out, otherwise the ones on the bottom would be crushed!

Would be a sight to see, but I think the separate family units have their own "wing" in the colony. You could still have quite a pile up.

Ours is pretty close - you should see when all seven are cuddled up together in the hammock! Unfortunately, now that we've had to seperate the boys and girls, they have to huddle in two piles and gaze at each other across the way... I'll see if I can pull up a picture and post it - I know I have one.
