:DHia, I just wanted to say how i take care of my Degus and ask if im doing any thing wrong. Please do not insult me if i am, just tell me what to change. Ok I have 2 Degus named Blue and Fatso . I used to have three but he recently passed away . I have had my Degus for about a year now. And i love them dearly. I got them from a friend of my Dads who found them plus another in side of a cage in the middle of the river valley >:(Horrible eh! Anyhoo, There is a room in side of a closet @ my house and i put there cage in there so that they can come out as often as they want but still go in to there cage for security and a close the doors to the cage @ night and turn off the light. I fead them Chinchilla and Guineepig food and used to fead them raisons as a treat untill(Thanks to this sight) I learned that thats bad for them. Please respond to the ways in which i care for them. Please hold any harsh comment though . ~Thank you~

Hi ! congratulations on the rescue, distressing to hear that people can leave animals to die like that. Why they can't leave them in a shelter is beyond me ! I'm sure you will get some information from more senior degu owners than myself, I only have mine since April and September. However I would just ask if you have toys ,especially a wheel for your guys? They really rely on those to keep active when they are in the cage. In the way of treats I know my guys ( well, guy and girl to be exact!) love wood shapes that are freely available in most petshops. It helps them wear down their teeth. There is loads of information on ways to keep them occupied available on this site. I'm sure you'll get loads more advice from the members on this site, best of luck. Just as a matter of interest, will they let you pick them up /stroke them or are they still freaked out by us humans due to their previous experiences? April

Hi
welcome to the site. I hope you find it useful. Please dont feel that anyone here may be harsh about how you care for your degus. We are a friendly nice bunch who just want to make sure that the degus out there in the big wide world are cared for. So if you are offered advice, its always given in the best interests. Harsh comments would only ever arrise if you were to post unsuitable advice to another member, or continually ignore good advice. So dont panic, Im sure you will do fine!
Its good to see you have already stopped the raisins. That is the only thing it sounds wasnt good for your degus, so well done!
How often are they interacted with being in this room? They need lots of attention, as they are very intelligent, and can get bored easily. If you are managing that, you are doing a great job, and giving your little degus a second chance at life after someone else so badly neglected them!
well done

Thanks guys! One of my Degus loves people and loves being held and stuff. The other one is a bit more frightend but is still ok around humans. I play with them every day and they have a wheel.

Sounds to me like they were lucky to find you. How awful that people will do that.....
They sound lovely and it sounds as if they have a brilliant life...now they have a caring 'mummy'.

sounds like you're doing pretty well to me! lucky you having a degu that likes to cuddle. mine seem to prefer taking treats from me and then ignoring me. XD
as long as they are getting sunlight during the day and can't hurt themselves when they're out of their cage, you're doing fine!

Welcome to the site! I found my degus abandoned as well - left to starve to death in a neighbor's garage after they moved. We absolutely adore them, and my daughter especially. We had to move them temporarily, so at the moment they reside in her room, which thrills her. One of the youngest, Jack, is so used to her now that he cuddeled up with her in bed the other day and napped while she watched TV!
Anyway, this forum is a wonderful resource for any questions you have, but it sounds to me like you are off to a good start and really care for your degus. Watching the sugars are key, and making sure they always have timothy hay and fresh water.
Good luck and take care! Leslie

Thankyou Leslie!! Thats soo sad and sooo licky that you found your Degus! How could any one have the heart to leave them in the garage!!! !!?? Were they in a cage of just running around the garage? How many do you have? I agree this forum is wonderful!! It is so unbelivably useful!!

I CANNOT believe that someone would leave their animals behind. That really bothers me. I was going to say that i also LOVE this site, i have been on here non-stop since yesterday when I found it. I have to tell you guys about this, it is SO cute. My little ham Gimly does this cute little trick and i was wondering if any of yours do this. He will stand up on his hind legs with his cute little hands on the cage and roll standing up, he actually does it on command now, i just go "Gimly do a roll"... and he will and i clap and cheer him on, sometimes but rarely i give him a saltless sunflower seed to. he love the attention he gets from it. my mom came to visit and he took a liking to her, because she is like the sweetest woman alive and i think they are really good judges of characters, and he was rolling nonstop for her, it was so cute

That is too cute! To answer your question, the degus we found were in an aquarium with garden mulch (GASP!) for bedding, and goodness knows how long it had been since it was changed! There were five of them, two we rehomed and now live with my daughter's best friend. Of the three remaining, one of the females and the male were mates and she has given us four more little darlings, so our grand total at the moment is seven. Two of the little girls are promised to a home after the holidays, and we'd like to find a home for the two boys as well.
