Greetings fellow Degu lover!
If I've read your post correctly your 5 Degus have long scratchy nails that you'd like to file down but hesitate because they are so new to you.
I just bought a Sandy Tunnel from The Exotic Pet Supply people on line. It's essentially a piece of hard plastic pipe imbedded with sand particles on the inside. So when the Degu runs through the tunnel they get their nails trimmed down. My sure do love running around and through things. It has helped already.

Takes lots of time and patients. You will want to spend time close to the cage reading or working on your computer etc. Talk quietly to your Degus. I spent a couple hours a night the first week or so. Eventually rested my open hand palm up inside the cage and let Mocha explore it. You have to remember they will taste things so he might nip you a bit at first. Try to not react. If he bites too hard just say no, turn out the light and leave. They are very social animals and adapt to new surroundings rather well.
If the alpha Degu starts to show interest in you offer him a treat one sunflower seed or one pumpkin seed in you open palm. He may just dart out and grab the seed an retreat. Be patient. You will want to find some sugarless treats. Some of the guinea pig treats are safe just read all ingredients listed NO Sugar, Honey, Molassas, Corn Syrup or or other such sweeteners.
Check out the bulletin board. There's a section on foods and lots of discussions about what your Degu likes best. What foods are safe etc.
