Hi all,
I've been lurking on this forum for the last few months, ever since I decided I'd like to get some small pets, and in doing research came across degus, I'd not heard of them til then. I've been poring over everyone's home made cages and ideas for enrichment etc, and finally finished the cage and got 4 gorgeous degus from a nearby rescue centre at the weekend, so thought I'd finally register so I can post some pics of the cage, and I have a couple of questions to ask about feeding issues etc.
But thanks for being an excellent resource for information thus far!

Welcome to the forum, atramentous. Great that you got your goos from a rescue centre. Have you named them?

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody!
I'm going with a colour theme for naming: Amber, Scarlet, Jade, Sienna. But I haven't assigned them yet, as I can't tell most of them apart. The only one who's unmistakable (and so I've already named: Amber) is a poor little lady who only has 3 legs and no tail! The previous owner rescued her from someone who wasn't doing anything about the fact that she had a snapped leg! But then she became temporarily homeless, and had many, many animals so she had to give them away. She had 11 degus, 2 boys, this 4 and another group of 5. They consist of 3 generations but the rescue wasn't sure who is who, so I'm not sure on their ages.
They seemed quite happy to be handled at the rescue place, so I was a bit surprised how nervous they've been since the move, but I know it's bound to unsettle them. They spent the first 3 days mostly in a burrow they made in the digging pit, but most of them are happy to explore the cage a lot more now. 1 is quite happy to eat from my hand, 1 will trepidatiously, Amber is working up the courage to but seems to lose her nerve at the last second and scurries away, and then there's 1 more who's nowhere close to approaching my hand yet!

It's amazing how strong their prey instincts are. Mine were unsettled for a month just from moving from one side of the dining room to the other! They just need some time and the right treats.

Welcome to the forum!! I have only just started reading through, so haven't seen your cage yet, but am looking forward to seeing it! You've done a great thing, taking the girls from rescue, and it sounds like they have come into a great home. Well done!
