Hello everyone,
I haven't been on here in a long time! Our computer completely fried and we lost all our stuff, FINALLY got it back together again!
Anyhow, I'm here to provide updates! The last post I believe I wrote was about the boys' (Taisuke and Mario) and the "problem" with their bottoms. Well, it was a great big sigh of relief! It was what we were hoping for all along! (embarrassing as it may be, but I had a right to be concerned considering everything I've read ). The mystery bumps ARE their 'boys' . The vet told as (as they're in their height of puberty ) that they do get bigger and can become noticeable (everything I read said that you cannot see them at all).
Recently Taisuke's been to the vet again. Mario and Taisuke have been a bit rough with each other lately and Taisuke was limping. Our vet (oh, and we were super glad to find out that the vet we had for our old little guy Toshi (hamster) also was knowledged in degus, we were happy with her service with Toshi, and happy once again with our boys ^^ ) His little foot was somewhat swollen, but she did not provide antibiotics right away, as he was tolerating the pain well and 'doping' him up could cause further injury because he could become careless (having the drugs hide the pain for him), but he is getting better and doesn't need the drugs after all, yay!
I separated the boys shortly after the injury occurred (when I noticed it) and they have been separated since so Taisuke can heal without Mario demanding dominance (It was about a week ago). At first they were very upset about it, especially Taisuke. They were placed close together so they could see each other and talk, but they just cried and cried and chewed the bars where they were to try to get back together. Now they are getting more used to it though. Taisuke is doing most of the pining (sp?). I felt so sad for him everytime I heard him cry, especially the first day or too, I just wanted to put them back together, but I knew it wouldn't be good . Actually, Mario seems happier without Taisuke (at least it appears so), his tail has been higher then ever and he's playing with everything in the cage (he's always been the "bigger" one, I mean, he established dominance early on, but lately Taisuke has been toughening up and we think Mario's feeling threatened. When they were still together, and Taisuke would actually push back, Mario would through a hissy fit and run to the top of their over 5 foot cage and 'cry' in the hammock. Taisuke would follow him with body language looking like he wanted to apologize and be friends again. Mario would turn around with his butt to Taisuke's face. He doesn't want to lose his position of dominance. Another thing is, with him being happier without Taisuke, may be that he's gotten to stay in the bigger better cage! (<- I mean, he may be happy because he is in the bigger better cage) We're going to trade them soon though, it's not fair that Taisuke gets to spend all his healing time in their crappy old cage Even Taisuke as he's getting the hang of the separation has been carrying his tail higher as well. Both of them actually talk to me now when I come up to them, instead of just coming and giving a physical greeting. (They still talk to each other too) But we're hoping that we can soon put them back together. When we do, we plan to watch them (not hard I'm always watching them when I can ^^) and if they continue to be rough we're going to save up the money to have them nutured (sp?). Our vet does it and suggested if they continue to be rough she can do it, or we'll have to keep them separated.
The boys may be having their 'real' dominance issues right now (as they are becoming 'men' ), but we know that they love each other to bits and will not stand for this separation for that long!
Ummmmm... what else..... I can't think, so I guess that's it....
^_^
