Hi there, My name is Erika and I just bought my first Degu yesterday. We named him Dali. I had never even heard of them before. The poor guy was by himself at the pet store but had a great disposition...so friendly. They are addictive! Anyhow, I know they should not be alone and I do not have the room to breed them yet so am looking for another young male to room with Dali. Dali is about 5 months old at most. I live in Canada. Vancouver, BC, actually and Degus are not common here I don't think. I saw one other older Degu somewhere but he was much older, and unfortunately, very grumpy...it was sad really. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction? Thanks so much, Erika

Yeah, he let me hold him at the store...very patient animal but I'm giving him two or three days after moving him home before I try to pick him up again. I want to give him some time as he is hiding in his igloo alot right now. We'll see in a few days...

yeah, it's good to give them some time to adjust to their new surroundings. i seem to remember seeing someone else here from BC, but i'm not sure... make a post in the market forum, and if there's someone here who can help, they'll find you.

Now he's been hanging around outside in his hay, checking out the toys and stuff I got him today. But mostly sitting around. At least he's out and about now. Thanks for the tip, I will check out the market place next. I know I want to pick him up all the time. I am constantly looking in and talking to him... so adorable.

it's good to hang around the cage and talk to him, so he can get used to your presence, your smell, the sound of your voice, without associating it with scary things.

Thanks. Do you know if the males should be about the same age if when introduced to eachother. I mean, should the new male I end up bringing home be the same age or younger?

i think one of my males is younger than the other, because he's smaller, but then they had been living together at the pet store before i bought them, so they were getting along before i had them. ideally, you'd want a male the same age, so there's fewer chances they'll feel threatened by one another.

Right. That makes sense. We actually found a rescue one sort of in the area. We get to bring him home August 6th! Yay!

Hi Erika, welcome to the forum, I try and make a point of saying hello to everyone that comes on here, just so you know who I am if you need anything, since Im the mad fool that set this all up.
If you want advice about putting males together, you found the right person. My four males are all different ages, and only the two youngest are related! Gromit is the oldest and 9 months older than Marmalade, and Marmalade is two years older than Dillan and Dougal, who are only a few months old right now, and litter mates.
If you go to the website linked to this forum you will find a good guide to introducing degus, its what I have done on each occasion of adding more, and it works well.
Good luck anyway, but I will just add, if you can, keep to a single sex group, as it is MUCH easier!
Meg ;D
