I thought it was about time I started a blog for these two cheeky goos. I've had them now for nearly 3 months and I have to say I am loving life as a degu mum just as much as I thought I would.
The boys came to me around a year old, their previous owner unfortunately couldn't care for them anymore and made the heartbreaking decision to part with them. As much as the previous owner had tried to give them everything they needed, making sure they had a degu pellet diet, a house and toys and plenty of hay and a large 12" wheel to run in the cage they came with wasn't the best, one of the generic Degu/Chinchilla homes you see at pet shops with a pull out tray but it meant that the degus were always on a wire shelf and they were beginning to squabble due to the close quarters.
I built them a new cage using vivariums and adding in additional ventilation and holes through to each level and in the summertime I plan to add a frame structure and tank to the bottom to allow them to dig to their hearts content. It has since had more ventilation and all the edges have been reinforced but here's what it looked like when we first built it to give you an idea:
It's basically designed so that any parts or sections can be replaced if necessary and it can also be extended either way (height/width/depth) very simply.
The boys sure like it and have become even more tame, Chili in particular will come right out when it's time for breakfast, he knows I know where all the good treats are and e certainly knows how to work me for them.
They have both gained weight and gotten better condition in their coats as I made sure the got plenty of hay and foragae as well as giving them each their own food bowls and increasing the quality of their food mix by adding in a seed mix from ratrations, and using three different types of degu food, mostly pellet although one which i use sparingly is more of a muesli so they don't get that one too often. They love it and have even stopped squabbling so much, there are sometimes little spats when one has a piece of food the other likes the look of but they are sorted out fine and at the end of the day when they've ran off more energy than I will ever have you can always find them cosied up in their little wooden hut snoozing.
Love these guys to bits and I really hope you enjoy hearing more about their adventures and seeing more pics from them.
Here's a few to start the thread off, some date back to when they first arrived.
