Hi tigerlily,
I was wondering if you had any pics yet of the cage. I have a large chinchilla cage but my husband has agreed to build one once we have the room.
My daughter is going to move in to our top room & her old room is going to be for our small pets. He is then going to build new homes for both our ratties & degus, so we can keep the main cages for quarentineing & new introductions if needs be. We have wanted to do this for a while as it will be a rat/degus proofed room and we can let them out at different times.
...Mikki..

Wow!! That looks great How do you get the trays out to clean them though? And can you get in to clean the mesh? I find with my lot that I have to scrub the mesh at least once a month where that run up and down it, otherwise it starts to get a bit whiffy ;D

Beautiful cage. Did you build it yourself? I take the wire cage is supported by the wooden frame so that the Degus cannot chew on the wood.

Where did you get the metal trays from? They're brilliant!!
The cage looks like a smaller version of part of our aviary, which also has to have the mesh on the inside. When my husband was adding to the aviary he also offered to build me a degu cage like yours but I couldn't think of a solution for the trays......

Metal trays are from one school, they made them for me. I build it by myself, my uncle helped me

It's a lovely sized cage!! Very cool.... roz - John Hopewell or Paul Spooner will make galvanised trays to order if you ask them. John's lovely to deal with, I've heard nothing but good things about him. His website is here: www.johnhopewell.co.uk/.....just e-mail him and ask and he'll tell you what he can/can't do. He isn't that cheap, but his stuff does seem to be very good quality. He will powder-coat things on request too. I asked him once.

Yep - brilliant value!! I've noticed that 'on the continent' (I've been on a German degu forum a few times) people seem to make degu cages much more than we do here.

I'd really love to be able to have a Degu proofed Degu room where I could just let the girls out to run free. The rooms in my house have too many bookshelves, chairs, couches, nooks and crannies for the girls to hide behind, under etc - not to mention two Yorkshire Terriers that would love to eat the girls. The only safe place is the bathroom and that's not very big.
Couldn't you just see a room built with resting shelves, mazes to play in, a large sand pit, running tubes etc. You wouldn't have to move things around to make it safe for the Degus to play.
Ah well dream on.

LOL. I often think of having a run around room myself. If I could ever afford a place with a spare bedroom, I would do it in a second. Let them just run around and go into their cage when they want but also to be escape proof and degu-proof in terms of safety. I guess it's a small animal owner kinda day dream.
