Hi Guys, what is the general feeling about giving Shredded Wheat to chinchillas as an occasional treat. It contains no sugar, salt or fat so in theory should be safe. However, having said that, I would hate to give my chins something that could potentially cause problems. Your views would be appreciated. Polly.

I would think a tiny amount if they love it (and I bet they do), but very limited as grains aren't part of their natural diet.

If it is this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shredded_Wheat...it should contain sugar. Maybe there are brands without sugar, but it is still rich in starch. Some chinchillas also have problems with starch.

It is a very gassy treat. I do 1/4 of a plain shredded wheat as a treat for their monthly checkup

Sorry, but it is not a grassy treat. Just like their pellets, the fibers are processed in a way that destroyes them in such a way the have no digestive benifit of the fibers at all. It doesn't do anything positive for the teeth either, again because of the way it is processed. There are way better treats out there, with far less processing involved.

LOL sorry, I thought you said grassy... But then I don't get it at all. Why would you give them something you know gives them gass?
