My two young female degus really enjoy a large rope that I put into their cage to make it more interesting. I bought it from a regular pet shop, I think it was designed for rats/ferrets but they love it. It stretches right across the cage from one level down to the next with easy to install bolts on each end. They love running up and down it and perching on it when im around to see what im up to and the best thing is they havent tried eating it yet!

Hello Kellynax,
we had a rope in our previous cage, and it took a while before they discoverd it is "chewable". Then they tried to rip it to pieces and drag them into their nest. ;D

We have just added a parrot perch adapted to be a shelf in the cage, they very quickly worked out that the rope was chewable, we are waiting for them to break through one support and fall off! Its not a big drop, but will mean repair work for the shelf!!!!

Ha ha, what a nightmare! I'll have to keep a close eye on them then! I also bought a small plastic parrot toy which i heard they might enjoy. It has a bell inside and is a nightmare because they only seem to roll it about/ throw it around the cage at night and it makes a hell of a noise! Fun to watch them carrying it around though.

It seems that any kind of toy designed for pets works for degus. Keep posting new ideas, we will soon have a community of the most pampered degus around!!

Oh dear i tried making things a bit different in my degu cage for them when i cleaned them out at the weekend and i dont think they like it one bit!
I moved their hammock and rope and wheel and ever since all they do is tip the wheel over on its side, throw things around and squabble. Oops.. think ill put things back the way they were tonight!
I tried the egg box trick with some treats inside it but they havent managed to find the treats yet.. im sure they will as soon as they have finished dismantling everything else in sight!!

what's the best way to affix those sandpaper tubes made for birdcages? i had one tied across their platform with their food dish so whenever they went to eat they had to run across it, but woke up this morning to find they had chewed through the string. seems the only stuff they can't chew through is metal, does anyone even sell long pieces of twistable wire?

Somewhere I saw a sandpaper belt that you put inside their running wheel to keep their nails filed short. I'm sorry I can't recall the brand of wheel or the site. Anyone else know?

about using the egg cartons, it sounds like a great toy... but what about the risk of spreading harmful bacteria to your degus? ie... salmonella! Its on the outside of the egg where all the bacteria lie, which is the part that comes in contact with the carton

Its on the outside of the egg where all the bacteria lie, which is the part that comes in contact with the carton That is something that hadnt occurred to me, but I have been using the egg carton game for years with all my pets and never had any problems regarding that. Only problem I get is when they dont want anyone else to try and get the treats and squabble over it! SUNSHINEMEG ;D
