i don't think it would be harmful, but wouldn't it get messy with the degus kicking it everywhere?

I allways use sawdust, its absorbent, but yes, they do tend to kick it out alot, like when they dig.

I use sawdust, as you can see in the webcam! (I cant hide anything!! ;D ) Its nice when it goes in as it has a nice smell, but they love kicking it about. i prefer how it looks to the absorbant grey stuff I also use, it smells better to start, but needs more frequent changing.
meg ;D

Yes, my degus do tend to kick out the sawdust - I have a dust pan and brush next to the cage. Is there anything else I could use that is not so messy?

Hi. Unfortunately, I've yet to find a supplier of Ecopetbed, it would be great if I could because the actual bale, (22kg) lasts ages and is only £6, what makes it so expensive is the delivery cost. Although compared to Bob Martins, which I had been using, it's much cheaper. Here's the web address for it anyway: www.earthlyenterprises.co.uk/you could also try e-mailing Andy Biz, who does a similar bedding and is sometimes cheaper: www.andyb.biz/There's also Bio-catolet, which makes a good alternative, but again, it's not cheap. You can buy this from Pets At Home, or from the web, here: www.gpsdirect.biz/ProductDetails~productID~2498~categoryid~60.aspxHope this helps. I don't like sawdust personally for small animals, because of the phenols in it and the dustiness, which is why I use other bedding alternatives. It is, however, a personal decison!

Hi Everyone. You know, my two degus are in a large chinchilla cage (the ones with the wire floor and the metal pull out tray ) I was using Bedxcel, which is similar to the ecopetbed cardboard squares. It`s fantastic litter, but I had problems in that because it got under the tray from falling through the wire when I removed the tray for cleaning, that and the poo falling everywhere was very messy. SO....I now line the wire floor with newspapers AND the tray underneath. Prinny my female rips it to bits around the edges and trails it into her wooden nest box! She can`t rip up the whole floor however because there are heavy logs and a sandbath sitting on the floor! Newspapers are cheap to use, the dye is non-toxic and easily thrown away every few days. I do use bedxcel for my mouse though and he carries the little squares of cardboard around to block off his house doors!

i was always under the imporession tha 'sawdust'was not good for degus because of their respiratory problems and if anything - woodchips flakes should be used instead - i actually use chopped bark as well - like you would use in reptile enclosures - the degu's love it. and it doesn't make as much mess!

Yeah I figured sawdust wasnt suitable for degus and have always stuck with the wood shavings. Unless of course "sawdust" is more than just powderey wood.

wood shavings are better than sawdust - but my lot definitely prefer the actual wood chips that you can get for lizards and snakes etc - which is untreated but cleaned chipped wood - they eat and scurrie and dig in this!!
