Well today I got home to find three little surprises in the nest box. At first I saw the blood on Leah's nose and thaught she was ill so I went to pick her up and saw three little baby chinnies in the nest box! I am so surprised and glad the birth went well but I have absolutely no idea how to care for them as I never planned for this... I could use some help and will post a pic later I'm still a little shocked

Correction 4 little chinnies! They are completely different colours and all healthy weights! There are so many, will they be ok alone for most of the day tomorrow, I don't want to leave them...

What a shock for you (I can relate). Still, Congratulations I don't know about Chinchillas but when this happened to me and my degus, the mom and her sisters took care of the babies. All they needed from me was food, hay and water. Are baby chins born with fur and with their eyes open like degus are? If so, they'll be wandering around the cage in no time. Just noticed – you have one Chinchilla, Leah. Did you get her recently?

I got Leah three months ago although her previous owner must have kept her with a male which was also being sold... I'm glad that the kits are all walking around but they seem to be getting cold and not being able to get back to the nest on their own which worries me, I am terrified of losing one of them

Does Leah round them up every so often? Is there any chance that they can climb out of the cage (through the bars)? I was so paranoid that the babies would fall out of the cage that I put cardboard all around just in case and even had my husband set up our security camera so that I could sort of watch out for them when I was at work. Really didn't need to do any of that. The moms took care of their babies (the one pup that passed away a couple of days after birth – San – probably had something wrong with it).

How are your little chin babies doing?? Are they all thriving? I sure hope so! I'd love to see some pictures.

They have all been doing fine and are all healthy weights, being 10 days old today and because they were all healthy, I decided to give them their first dust bath... Mum jumped in but that made a little baby (Ozzy) squeak constantly, he carried on so we took him out the room wrapped in a towel until he calmed down, none of the babies decided to have a dust bath so I decided to leave it for a bit but now whenever Ozzy is put near his mum he squeaks like mad, so does his mum, for now he's curled up on my knee (all four are boys) I don't know what to do? (Am rounding them up for a photo now)

Congratulations on your new babies. From experience, a female I owned some years ago gave birth to twins unexpectedly. Within hours, both were fully mobile and within a few days were bouncing after mum around the cage. Mum will normally make an excellent job of raising kits. Don't panic too much. Will you keep the kits or sell them at a later date? What colours did Leah produce?
