My dad has his own land scaping business and he cuts down alot of trees and what not. Well, he cut down this one tree that had big holes in the middle. He brought it home and I put it in the bottom of my cage and my degus love it! They're running in and out of the middle and chewing on it. It's the perfect toy for them! I gotta get some pictures this is so awesome! I love putting new things in their cage and watching them discover it. Anyways, has anyone else done this?

Anna, You just have to be certain the wood is not toxic to Degus. I believe there is a list of which woods are safe for Degus on the web page. I cut and dry branches from my apple trees for my Degu Girls. They do love to climb on them and knaw off the bark. I'd read you should replace the branches when the bark is chew off. I think the girls have gone through four of the branches since April. I just cut another batch today when I pruned my Granny Smith Apple tree.

Actually before I put it in the cage I did some research.. They have a huge hole in it already! They chew more than any other animal I've had before. I put these little wooden boards down at the bottom of the cage (knowing they'd get chewed).. I've been trying to keep their poo in their cage as much as I can but they've already chewed the wood down really far.

Yes, keep to apple wood, as this is known to be safe for degus. Whatever you do dont use willow, as this is very toxic to degus. And make sure whatever wood you use is free of rot, fungus or bugs!
If you do manage to get a gnarled piece of apple wood, they will love you for ever for the fun it will give them! post some pics!

if apple wood is safe for degus, does that mean other kinds of fruit wood are? there are these sticks i see at the store that says they are from fruit trees, but it doesn't say what kind of fruit. also, aspen should be okay for degus right? because aspen is the recommended wood-based bedding for other animals.

I have always been taught that apple wood is safe, as it doesnt contain any poisons. cannot say about other fruit wood, but would think its ok. aspen is fine for just the reason you say! Its really just avoiding known poisonous woods, such as the willow.
