Well, I don't seem to be having much luck with wheels. I am on the 2nd one already (only had them since march). I bought the silent spinner wheel (or should I say not so silent spinner). well, I think my degus have run so fast on it that it has cracked in the middle and some of the plastic has worn down in the middle also. It fell off this morning so I have had to take it out (poor boys they are going to be so bored). Good job I have ordered John Hopewell's wheel last week (along with a new cage as the one they are using now has wire at the bottom). I'll never had any money at this rate!!!!! I hope this wheel is quieter then the rest we have had - we had to shout over the top of it and my son was getting cross with the degus as he could not hear his tv programmes. My new cage and wheel should arrive on Tuesday so they don't have long to wait.

the john hopewell wheel (that's the flying saucer one, right?) is very quiet, in and of itself. it's rather heavy, though, so if your cage isn't that sturdy it may make some noise moving the walls of the cage. but it's not unbearable. my degus LOVE it, though, and i love watching them finally able to run full-speed. ^__^

Isnt the smallest Hopewell wheel 12" diameter? I need something 10" max as the height of the cage level it would go in is 12", so the Hopewell wheel would be too big! Otherwise I would love one! (And so would Dougal!)

Yes, I am afraid that it is a 12 inch wheel (i really hope it is quiter then all the rest we have had, I think I will go nuts if not). My poor boys have been gnawing like anything since the wheel has been taken off!!!!!

I keep a spare wheel in the cubboard under the cage for when the one they have dies. If Dougal has to go any length of time without a wheel he goes bonkers!!!

Yippee! My new cage and wheel has arrived and it is brilliant. The wheel is so much quiter, it only rattles the cage a little bit.

I got a metal wheel with the horizontal bars and sewed a piece of fabric along it so they dont get their digits or tails caught in the bars and every couple of days I use cooking oil on it so it doesnt squeak. I've had the same wheel since May and it hasnt crapped out on me yet nor does it look like it will anytime soon. If you oil the place where the wheel connects with the stand it stops the squeeking right away.

I used vaseline on my squeaky wheel and it works great!
