Hi all.
Just checking if there is some way I can make the floor of our degu cage safe. We have a thickets (?) cage so the floor is wire mesh. Could I lay wooden board over the bottom of it? In the meantime will cardboard do?
We rescued the degu from a local print ship where he was causing chaos, so didn't have time to research cages so just went with an old chinchilla one from a car boot sale. It's nice and big but worried about the floor. Any general help also appreciated.
Cheers Dave

You can lift the tray out and fit it on top of the mesh base, problem solved! I see you are in at the deepend at the moment, so will try not to overload you, but he will need a bigger cage at some point, you can stack up the thickets cages. He will also need a friend, first thing is to check he is definitely a boy! Welcome to the forum and to degus , well done for giving him a home

Hi Bananaboy You may be able to do as Molette suggests, although I know we have some old Thickets chin cages which you can't do that with.http://deguworld.proboards.com/post/108974/edit# Cardboard (plain brown cardboard boxes from supermarkets) is actually, we find, a good flooring even over solid floors. You can cut it to size - bit of a faff - It soaks up pee, protects feet and they can nibble and tear at it for fun. Then you can put into recycling or compost it on cleaning out. (Try little convenience stores or other independent shops if you have trouble getting boxes from big supermarkets). Ah - if it's a tall cage, make sure your goo can't fall the height of the cage. Adding pine shelves or stretching a square hammock like this one across half-way up is a good idea. (no relation - a satisfied customer only) www.hammockyhammocks.co.uk/zoom_MO_R2G_0712.htm

Thanks so much for the advice guys. If you go over to the degu chat section you will find the rather curious tale of how we acquired the little chap. We have lined the base of the cage with cardboard and it looks much more comfortable for him to move about on.
