I was weighing my two degus this evening and one has put on 11g while the other has put on nothing, the month before they both put on about 10 to 11g. I had noticed that Lister (the one who has put on weight) was looking a little chunkier, but as he is not as outgoing as Kryten, the only time i get to hold him is if i have to catch him for some reason. When I caught him today I noticed that he feels alot firmer around the tummy, but i couldnt feel anything that felt like babys. I got a picture of his genitals, but couldn't get a pic to Krytens to compare to as he was grumpy from me trying to look and bit me (again) here is the picture of Lister, can some of you have a look and tell me if you think its a boy or a girl. to me it looks like a smaller gap than Kryten, but without having them side by side im not sure. Thanks for your help and advice in advance Shads

Yep!! That is definitely a male? Does your other goo have the same distance between anus and urethral cone, or are they much closer together?

That one is definitely a boy. Is the picture of the goo you think may be female?
My degus range from 240g-300g (all fully grown adults) so weight variation is normal. I would imagine even more so if they are growing goos, how old are they?

ok thanks he must just be eating more and exercising less than kryten. Kryten ( the one i didn't get a picture of is defiantly a male, as his gap wider than listers (thats why i was worried, because listers gap is smaller than krytens)) they are probably about 6 or 7 months old now (think they were about 4 or 5 when we got them) so i was expecting some weight gain, but was just a bit concerned that one had put on so much more than the other, because last month they both gained about the same amount.

I think you were on the ball to spot this, if it reassures you more the size of the gap does vary, and it's also normal for one degu to become bigger than the other, it's usually the dominant goo who is bigger (unless one is a lot more energetic than the other).

This post actually reminded me about our two little ones, I was confident at the store that at least one was female, and the vets confirmed their sexing before I gave my opinion, but I would like to double check. I have had another look, and I also have slight concerns now about one of ours. Hazel is definitely female, but Nutmeg I am unsure about. The problem is the little thing won't stay still long enough for me to get a proper look. I have tried grabbing her in the towel but she is such a wriggly little thing...and I am kind of worried about holding her too tight because of her size, and my clumsy big hands!! Does anyone have any tips on how best to grip a smaller goo?

Saddlers - I think it depends alot on their habits, ours love climbing the cage bars so we get a good look when they are least expecting it. Also one of them insists on sleeping on her back, legs in the air etc. so again we can't really ignore her, errr, parts. lol Maybe encourage them to climb so you can get a closer look or you could try a fluffy towel that they will feel comfortable in and let you position it as you need

Did you get a good look yet, Saddlers? I was just thinking with the first meeting not going so well, that it would be good to confirm they are both girls.

Yes she let me have a look tonight and I am fairly confident she is a she, still no photo though but I will try and get one so someone more in the know can double check

Have you tried putting your degu in glass dish and then taking a picture from down under through glass? Obviously you will need a helper for this If your goo won`t stand still at all you could take a video of "it" and then we could take a look...
