I am in the process of making my own metal wheel, I am using a 12" cake tin and a skate board wheel as the bearing

Chins need a much bigger diameter than degus so finding a suitable tin or plate for a saucer can be difficult. The build itself would be pretty much the same as making one for a degu. I think Ikea might have had a big metal serving tray in that could be suitable for a saucer.

12" is definitely too small for a chin. They're much bigger than degus. I'd definitely go with what Lrak said and have at least a 15". Good luck with the build! Can't wait to see pictures!

I am not a chin owner but I am reading in chin forums from time to time to get some ideas I can use for my degus. Here in Germany it is discussed that running wheels and plates for chins have to be really huge, in the case of the wheels at least 50 cm (around 20''). I know there is this picture of a chin in a Karlie Wonderland running wheel of 29 cm. This is pure animal cruelty as this wheel is even too small for degus. Just my 2 cents...

Saucer should be around 45 cm or better more. Running wheels are at least very uncommon for chinchillas in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, most owner use no wheel nor saucer but the rest uses mainly saucers.
