We have always wanted to breed degus further down the line when we have the facilities and space for millions of degus! We were always planning to breed then keep the female pups, neuter dad and re-home the baby boys. But recently while scanning degus for adoption/sale (No degu lover can pretend they don't do that) I've noticed that there are so many boys around for adoption now =[ So when we do breed, we shall be making sure we have enough room to keep two colonies!
Anyways, to the point of what I wanted to know... I know that females shouldn't breed until they are over a year old, and that breeding stunts the lifespan of a degu, but how old is too old for a degu to breed? We have always wanted to breed degus, and if I had to choose one of my four lovelies to get the chance to have a family, it would always have to be Spook, but she is already pushing 4 years old, and it'll be another couple of years before we can breed. I wouldn't want to put her in any danger. What tends to be recommended here?

I've really no idea about this, and I think it is a very valid and important question to know the answer to. There must be an answer available somewhere.

Thank you so much for this information, Davx!! It is very much appreciated! I'll have to look it up . . . though it will have to wait today. I've already been on the forum for nearly two hours and I better bring it to a close for now. LOL!
