Hello again everyone,
Thought I would drop in and let people know how the girls and I are doing.
Though I haven't been able to work with them every day I think I am really making progress, it has been exactly two weeks since I have had them today.
All three of them will eat puffed wheat out of my (and the bf's) hands. Samus and Zelda are relaxed enough that they will come out of the cage, and all three of them know how to climb down from the top of the dog crate to run around on the floor... but they wont jump over the (very) short small pet pen that I have set up in the door way.
Peach and sometimes the other two will do warning barks at my cat who just sits and watches them.
When they are eating treats from my hand they will get very vocal with each other, sometimes pushing their sister out of the way a bit.
I am saving up money to buy hard ware cloth to convert the dog crate into a new home for them. Thinking of setting their current cage inside it for something to climb around on.

Ah the typical, too many degus/not enough hands dilemma Glad to hear you are making progress with them! I'm sure it won't be long until they want to go adventuring and decide jumping out the playpen is a grand idea lol.

So glad things are going well with the girls!! You're doing great!
How big is the dog crate that you are thinking of converting?

It is a 42in extra large dog crate, I don't have the other two numbers on hand. I used a cage calculator said it was good for two- four degus. Only issue i will have is putting in ledges.

Excellent suggestion, Lrak! That will give a view of how the bars are arranged on it, which will help in knowing where to find support for the levels. It sounds like a great option, Bandicuster!

I think I spoke to soon yesterday.... <.< Pretty sure Samus (the one that is really adventurous) jumped the pen and was running around the main part of my room XD Zelda was in my hay drawer.... (had the top drawer open in a small plastic dresser) and Peach was being a good girl chilling in the cage. XD

the dog crate: dog crate with their cage on top: Was thinking of putting the hard wear cloth on the outside, of the cage. I was thinking of also putting their current cage inside it as a play area/safe zone inside the cage where i can either attach their wheel (keep debating a new wheel a Silent Spinner or Flying Saucer)

I think I would follow a different plan, myself. I think you could put a full shelf/level inside that cage, with a little bit of wiggling and fussing. You have to put the level in using pieces that you slide up to each other, otherwise they won't fit through the small door, but it can be done. I've done it in the past . . . but then my hubby threw out the pieces thinking they were just junk. If your crate is the same size as I have been using for some degus, then you probably have room to place the additional level at about the 18 " mark, which will still give plenty of room for the wheel to be on the floor level, which great running space on the added level. I have been meaning to put in a second full level in our crate, but haven't done it yet. Perhaps this is a good time to take that on and then post pictures if you aren't sure what I am meaning. The horizontal bars are pretty strong, so you can use those to anchor the additional level to. Put a wooden tray beneath the cage with a tall wooden lip around it to help keep your substrate in. On top of the crate place/attach another wooden tray with another tall lip around it, and within that tray place the current cage to be like a pent house with a playing deck. You can probably make an opening between the crate and the base of their current cage, so that they can climb up through and have access.

Want to know a great thing about the crate Deguconvert.... it isn't the standard fold down kind... the top of it comes off so I can get a full piece for a level and put it down it is a 4 (5 if you enclude the tray) cage: top, bottom, left/back, and right/front with two pins kiddy corner to hold it together... Thank you for the idea, cant wait to work this winter break get to do a total of 2 weeks at 40 hrs a week, so after I pay rent, I can get what i need.

do goos collect things?
just asking because the cat ball I gave them ( solid plastic ball with a bell in it) is now in their hammock... and the bell to their treat hanger has been unscrewed and hid somewhere....<.<
both originally are at the bottom of the cage...
