Hi all Today Dobby through himself out of my hands just at the end of free run time when I was trying to et him unsuccessfully back into his cage. I have a huge slice down my thumb. Quite deep as took 15 mins to stop bleeding. Now I'm not sure if he bit me or just caught his nail in my thumb. I was wondering are there any adverse effects to being cut? I read on the Internet before getting my boys a year ago that people have had allergic reactions and ended up in hospital. At the moment my thumb is really painful, really hot and slightly swollen. When my boys scratch me normally it does scar. I just wondered if anyone knew if this is normal or not? Thanks in advance.

A scratch shouldn't be deep, as their nails just aren't big enough. A bite is usually a puncture that features upper and lower teeth locations, not a gash, so I can't help but wonder if you met with something else that could have cut your thumb? I think you maybe should consider going to the doctor to have it looked at. Maybe you need stitches, or antibiotics, or a tetnis shot? Have you bathed it in a luke warm water and salt bath? Although, if it is deep and open, you maybe should see a doctor first before doing that.
I'm so sorry about your injury! You should have it looked at quickly, I think.

How is your cut now?
Really hot and painful are concerning signs. If you think you allergic (you noted that you scar from degu scratches), and have used an antihistamine like Benadryl before, then it might be prudent to take one.
You probably should also see a doctor.

It's still bleeding, swollen, painful and hot. I'm gonna see how it is in morning and go then. Have been putting anti bacterial cream on it and need to buy anti histameans tomorrow.
It was def Dobby that did it as was nothing else around. I was stood up ready to pop him back in his cage after scooping him up off the floor. It is definitely not a bite just a scratch. Cheeky little toad that he is.

From what I remember reading about degu bites, it's a bacteria in their mouths that releases toxins which you are allergic to, and they recommend letting it bleed freely to try and get it out.
Hope it's better this morning!

It's still swollen and sore but thankfully stopped bleeding. I tried antihistamines but they made me sick!! So just going to let swelling go down naturally. First Degu injury tho so not terrible.
Thanks lrak!

Soaking it in warm salted water is VERY helpful, so I recommend that you do that.

Is it going red? Or does it have little red lines coming out of it? If so then get to the hospital or docs as it might well be an invection. Is it burning?

It's better today. Hurts when I knock it which seems to happen every 5 mins at work. But keepin it covered when not in house. Still red and swollen but not too much or too painful. I have washed it in salt already (stings terribly, now I understand why Dobby hates it when I bathe him, lol) but I think it'll w ok. Probs scar as the normal Degu scratches do on me but I don't mind that.
