Hi everyone, Just a quick question: The breeder I'm getting my goos from has told me that there are 4 boys and 4 girls (Blues, not Agouti - which is the colour I wanted)... It's perfect really, because I wanted 4 of one gender, and now I can chose which!! Anyway, problem is - I don't know whether to get 4 boys, or 4 girls... Are there any differences between boys and girls? So, any advice would be appreciated... Thank you P.S. They're ready to be picked up at the end of this week! So excited :')

Don't know if there really are differences but my cage of boys (5 of them) fight more than my cages of girls and are a little cleaner than my girls. That's about it. Let us know when you get them!

Aww exciting. For me the girls are messy compared to the boys as they spray urine up walls. They do squabble but tends to be over food and doesn't last, whereas the boys seem to have random periods where something kickstarts an argument and then they just get on each other's nerves for a little while after (but love each other really).
The other thing I've noticed is the girls have more energy and can be bothered to chew and take more pleasure in destroying things, generally more active whereas all the boys are so lazy.
Both genders are equally appealing and confident characters for me but personally I think I would get boys again if I was ever to get any more.

I don't think there is a marked difference in behaviour between boys and girls, nothing has emerged on the forum generally anyway.
Boys seem to be slightly more likely to fight and if you have young kids or often invite the vicar or mother in law round the boys' tendency to do rude things to themselves could be inconvenient.

Update: Turns out when I asked the breeder how old the "new" litters were, they are 2 different ages, and with completely different parents. So basically he just has a big "baby cage" where he puts all of the litters in and waits until they are sold... So they're all different ages and genders from different litters, mixed together. Not too happy about still getting goos from this breeder anymore... Ohhh, I was so excited for the weekend, but now I don't have anything to look forward to... And I'm going to have to start searching for another breeder again

I'm sorry to hear this, but at least you found out before you got them! Are you completely set on getting blue babies? Agoutis are just as cute and easier to come by with responsible breeders!

Daydreamer, I don't understand why this should put you off? They are still the same little degus as they would be if they were still in with their mums . . . just in with other pups. Yes their ages are going to be different, but they should be fairly near in age I would expect. Perhaps you can ask the breeder what the oldest to youngest age difference would be. Once you see them, you will love them, and if there are four boys/girls to be had, and that is the number you wanted, well I'd say go for it!!

Update: (And deguconvert - you were right) Today, I decided that I was being a bit silly - the age gap was quite big, so I definitely wouldn't have got those goos. However, there are 4 female, blue pups, which are all the same age and from the same litter - they are 8 weeks old today. I have decided that I will be getting these females, so I will be picking them up on sunday. Thank you to everyone who has given me advice on this topic - I'm very glad I've finally decided what I'm going to do. So, I'm very much looking forward to Sunday afternoon, when I will be the happy owner of 4, 8 week old, female blue goos
