Your best bet for now is to start making your way reading through the sticky threads in the food and housing sections of the forum. Browse through all the pictures of options for housing in the 'Show us your Cage' thread. There's loads of information and ideas to keep you busy. The sweetcorn thing isn't the best choice of food extra. Briefly, the main thing you need to supplement on top of mix/ nuggets and hay is more herbs/ veg/ leaves/ plant matter as this is what they eat in the wild. A few seeds will go down really well for taming and training too Tiny little nibbles mean they are grooming you which means they like you Just make a little yip noise if they do it too hard, if you watch them groom each other you will get the idea. They sometimes will do a slightly bigger but still gentle nibble if they are trying to tell you something.

but as least we have got 4 of the degus away from them!!! I started thinking like that now i cant go in there with out wanting to save all the animals A lot of people on start of with an old wardrobe of something and convert but you could always make your own using Ply/MDF you just need to make sure you cap the ends with kiln dried pine so the degus cant eat it. There are lots of ideas and hints in the housing section on here for you to look at for ideas. ok thank you ill have a look ;D

i havent been in there for ages tbh....
anyways im trying to be crafty......
i have e mailed pets at home head office with a seemingly harmless question about the thickets house cage asking how many adult degu it can legally hold.....
hoping they reply 1-2 and then i can kick some ass with the rspca info i got and why did their portsmouth branch sell and assure me it would be plenty of room for 4 adult degu!!
then im going to hassle them untill i get my money back so i can use it towards building or buying the right sized cage! and if they refuse ill inform them that i will be passing it on to the rspca !! sods!!
and that im having to foot the vets bill for a fungal infection they had before i purchased them
sound like a plan? ;D

Yes, definitely mention them selling unhealthy animals, as this is against the law, they will be aware you can report them to the council for this. You can mention Trading Standards for the cage size - goods must be fit for purpose

Umm it's got staples right next to it and toys r us and comet and other big shops across the road not sure about sports one though, Well my husband phoned up the bet yesterday to stress that the infection has spread and we need a result, and he said he's not paying for the treatment as they must have already had it, she said we needed to take it up with the manager and also about the cage size we also have to take that up with the manager too were going back to pets at home tomorro to pick up the medication for the goos so my husband is going to have it out with the manager then, and I'm going to hide in te car lol!!!!! ;D

It's horrible having to complain, but it's absolutely worth doing, especially in a case like this. Good luck!

Please let us know what happens! They recommended a plastic bottom cage to us, designed for gerbils, when we got out boy at P@H. Thank god we didn't get it, he'd have destroyed it in seconds! But our shop - although not well trained in all things degu, never seems to have sick pets/fish there, and every pet I ever got their is in a good condition and not gotten sick. I have the thickets cage for my boy right now, because I had NO idea it was too small (I was as angry as you when I found out!) but he comes out in his ball, and bath playtime, A LOT. But obviously planning to build a bigger home for him when cash allows I just can't believe these morons are selling cages to small, or just completely wrong, especially as they are SO expensive too!!
