hi. i've recently taken an interest in degus after my hamster passed away this week . the fact that they don't wake up when i go to bed started my appeal but having done a bit of research they seem like great pets. Rather than going to pets at home, which is a horrible place in my opinoin, i thought i would inquire here if there are any available in the west sussex area. quite happy to travel 25 miles or so to collect.

Welcome to the mad world of goos! They are extremely different to hams but if you've done your reading and are prepared for the longer commitment of degus and all their dietary and spatial needs then you should do okay and find them to be a very rewarding pet Have you looked at rescues in your area for some? I think a lot of people have gotten mis sexed pairs or not realised how much work and space they require before gettimg them from pet shops and wind up giving them up. They usually prove difficult to rehome so they tend to stay for a while before someone picks them up.

main reason for coming to the site is that i want same sex pairs. dont want the trauma of pets at home assuring me i have 2 females then ending up with them multiplying.

Oh I can understand that, there have been far too many cases in the past there's no saying you couldn't double check if you know what you're looking at, but a lot of people don't like to buy pet shop animals out of principle for the conditions they're kept (and often bred) in.

Welcome to the forum Paul Keep an eye on our adoption area and there's a sticky in there too listing lots of rescue places - you might find a local rescue organisation that could help you.

Welcome, welcome, welcome. Like you, I am new to goos. I got mine yesterday from a private breeder, they turn out to be great pets but need a lot of patience and time. If they haven't been handled from a young age then taming can be difficult, and the dietary requirements can be hard if you don't research enough. For instance, with the taming thing, currently mine are huddled in a corner playing but whenever I walk past they freeze - I'm gonna have fun taming them, lol. Yeah but seriously, they are great and even if they don't like you (like mine) you will have a lot of fun watching them.
