Hey everyone I have recently bought myself 4 male degus and believe they are just becoming teenagers and very naughty they seem to be becoming tame fairly quick but haven't been able to pick them up properly yet!I only have one question and that is everytime I open the cage they all try to jump out is there any tips to stop this?I let them out into a homemade pen everyday(always an escape artist to keep me busy)but as I work shifts it can be a little annoying to have to worry everytime I open the cage up any help will be much appreciated thanks : ) zofia

From what I've heard, the bigger the cage the less they try to escape. But I can't see that happening when we get the upgrade lol! They just naturally seem to want to explore, which isn't good when they're in a room with a lot of wires!

Thank you : ) I didn't think there would be much I could do the cage is about 5 foot tall and 3 foot wide so not sure its the cage size I suppose my bestbet is to keep trying to tame them so when the do go for an adventure I can atleast put them back in abit easyier they are fairly tame already they will jump in my hand with food and stroke them for a short time I have only had them for a month so its great to hear about others degus : )

Hello Zofia and welcome to the forum! Do you have doors on the cage at different levels? If you do, have you tried opening one on a higher level? They will normally hesitate before leaping, which should help you to control them.

A cardboard tube is the best way to put them back in, most degus never like being picked up but can't resist going into a tube. Perhaps you can train them to wait for a treat, or keep them busy with a treat like a millet ball from a millet spray, anything that will keep them still for a minute.
