Treats, and how often they should be given...

Hi everyone,
Just trying to plan what I'll need to buy (If i ever find a breeder!!) for my goos... A sort of mini-shopping list, which I'm sure wont be very mini!!

So, I've read on lots of different websites about treats, and I was wondering what I should get, and how often I should give it to them. Are there any foods that should only be given Once a month, and any that can be given daily?

I'm aware about their sugar levels, so no need to explain that, but if I could just have a list of good/bad foods and how often they can be given, that would be great.

there are lots of other threads in the sticky area about foods and food supplements that you might like to look through.

It's difficult to say what can be eaten daily and what weekly, it all depends on what else they are eating, you have to consider the diet as a whole. If you are feeding mainly a commercial mix, then it's best to use plants and veg as supplements, if you try a whole variety you are bound to find some the love that will work as treats. You can also use oil seeds and nuts as treats in smaller amounts, they are high in fat, but high in trace elements and vitamins so are useful if you get the balance right, and your degus will love them.

I'm finding all the advice very useful.

I'm in Surrey, near Guildford. Ideally, I'd love 3/4 goos - I don't know what gender yet, is there any differences between 4 male and 4 female??

I'm probably going to make my own cage, which will be about H180, W90 and D45... I might change those measurements though, still planning it.

Glad you are finding all the info useful, degus are quite a different experience to other small furry pets.

There's not much difference in behaviour between male and female, they are equally active and inquisitive, boys are slightly more likely to give you fighting issues, particularly through puberty.

I'd recommend going a bit wider and deeper if you can with the cage size if you have the space.
